Worldbuilding, nonhumans, and the inaccurarcy of Earth parallels

Also, civilizations can go a long time without an amount of technological variance that we would recognize as progress. Half of human history had passed by the time Cyrus overthrew the Medes. Yet I would argue that the technology would be mutually recognizable for most of the cultures to exist...

Martial Controller: Auxiliary (Version 0.11) -Updated Preview Character (Aug. 9th)

I don't know. there are a lot of elements I don't really follow about your counter-arguments. I'll just touch on the main points here: * I don't understand your concern about what happens to the area of effect. The area of effect still applies. You have simply refused to apply the actual...

    Quick Question on Damage

Thanks. I knew it would be a quick end to my curiousity.

Very first thoughts after reading 4e PHB

That's what the DMG tells me. Hmm, what did I think after I first read the DMG? This may sound odd, but immediately after reading it I think I was most struck by the flavor of the races - from the beginning - and the elegance of the combat chapter - from the end. I also really liked the new...

    Quick Question on Damage

Do powers and weapons that deal damage modified by abilities have their damage ratings increase alongside the ability checks? So that a 1st level wizard with magic missile does Int vs Reflex on attack, at second level that Int vs Reflex attack goes up by 1 as the wizard adds the level based...

Stalker0's Obsidian Skill Challenge System (Update: Version 1.1) Now with PDF!!

It looks pretty practicable. Now, given that I am in no way a math wonk, if I try this system out this weekend what sort of feedback would you like to get?

    D&D 4E Converting 4E to Al-Qadim

I actually think you could drop the sorceror completely and just have wizards. But you could then introduce a series of feats that let wizards get elemental affiliation and say they couldn't have more than two. Or that they get one initiate feat and then either a second initiate or a dedicated...

The Sha'ir (In progress, initial powers to 2nd)

I thought about doing Sha'ir off of warlocks too, and I think a parallel structure would work really well, but I'm open to the idea of a class that uses summoning - in some sense - right from the start as well.

Martial Controller: Auxiliary (Version 0.11) -Updated Preview Character (Aug. 9th)

Auxilliary is awesome: 1: It's archaic - just like Ranger, Rogue, Paladin, and Warlord 2: It describes the role - this guy is your cunning second rank soldier, which is exactly what a wizard is except he has more degrees 3: Every exemplar we've described for the class fits the term auxilliary...

Martial Controller: Auxiliary (Version 0.11) -Updated Preview Character (Aug. 9th)

True, but within that definition you do not attack individual squares. You make attacks against targets within those squares. Volley enables you to refuse an attack. I don't think this is the best interpretation of the GSL, since a keyword adds to the applicability of a power which is...

The Monk -- a Martial Controller

As far as I can tell from the information in the core books there are really only two controller qualities and one shadow quality: 1.) Controllers get cheap effective AoE or other forms of multiple attacks per round 2.) Controllers must be vulnerable in Melee combat Shadow Quality...

Quick Orb Boost (vs. wand, staff)

    Isn't the orb already overpowered?

The Sha'ir (In progress, initial powers to 2nd)

I like the idea of Invigoration giving small benefits in addition to the healing surge rather than empowering the healing surge directly. There's already a precedent for that with second wind's bonuses to defense.

My Experience of 4e Marketing Failing

I think their thinking was that that they wanted the 'expert' community to be familiar with the game before they started recruiting novices. That's not a horrible general strategy given how much recruitment for this game moves from the experts to friendly outsiders.

    D&D 4E Converting 4E to Al-Qadim

Of course the other question to ask is how you fit specific 4E classes into the setting, should you want to. The Warlord looks like a good fit. Personally, I'd slot the Mameluke as a build underneath the Warlord. Maybe the Barbarian Mercenary as well. Anything professional and relatively...

Pramas on 4E and New Gamers

I actually think that experienced gamers are going to have more problems then inexperienced gamers. Decades of manuals for this game written according to a conventional but not necessarilly well concieved organizational paradigm have created some very bad habits in people. It would be...

My Experience of 4e Marketing Failing

I'm just guessing here, but I'd bet that you're deli actually cares a lot more about getting expert customer service out of its employees than the big box book store cares about getting it out of its helpless worker drones. This isn't just a failing on WotC's part here.

Feats and Builds is how I would make it work as well.
