D&D General I wish people would avoid name-dropping Gary Gygax

I basically agree. However, given that his authorship is a somewhat contentious issue that even wound him up in court, and losing, I can see how some folks might take issue with describing 1e as Gygax’s edition.

Goodman Games Offers Assurances About Judges Guild Royalties

I have great nostalgia for CSotIV, but I don't think we ever actually used it in play. My friend Steve had it and lent it to me, so I read it over and over. I was just a kid; this was shortly after I discovered D&D, so 1979-80 or so. This is around 45 years later so take these recollections...

Do Tariffs Apply To RPG Books? Maybe, Maybe Not!

Didn’t WotC, with all their resources, recently stop doing some significant foreign language editions? If they have trouble making it profitable, it doesn’t bode well for anyone else.

How Will The New Tariffs Affect TTRPG Prices?

Probably not, though given that the US runs a massive surplus in services you'd think it would be even more disastrous for them than trade tariffs have been. Still, it seems obviously foolish to assume anything about US trade policy at this point, so perhaps I should brace for a DDB tariff...

D&D General The First Demise of TSR: Gygax's Folly

The podcast cites any number of people who hated his guts, and not without reason.

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

I’ve found it’s generally unwise to argue game math with @ECMO3.

D&D 5E (2014) If you could run or play in any D&D 5e campaign right now, which would it be?

I haven’t played Keep on the Borderlands since around 1980, when I ran it a bunch of times. I would love to play it.

D&D General When We Were Wizards: Review of the Completed Podcast!

Obvious to you and me and obvious to a woman who literally came from a family fortune founded on Buck Rogers IP, and who really didn't understand the hobby she bought into, are two different things. I imagine that from her perspective, it would make sense that these nerd things would go...

D&D General When We Were Wizards: Review of the Completed Podcast!

That latter criticism is one that I've never understood, at least not from an ethical perspective. She owned a genre-based game design and publishing company. Her family owned the Buck Rogers rights, which had previously been pretty lucrative (I loved the TV show when I was a kid, so it's not...

D&D 5E (2024) OAR 10 City State of the Invincible Overlord

Specifically: So make your decisions accordingly. Mine is pretty straightforward.

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

Good post. I agree with your general experience, especially about parties that are too heavy on casters or martials being kind of wonky to run (unless you have experienced players who know how to compensate, but none of my players are @ECMO3). I just ran a game with a group that was missing...

Generally, I would disapprove, but in this case...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

I find that what is missing from a lot of these conversations is much attention on the drawbacks faced by pure casters, especially in 2024: low reliability and low damage output in most situations, especially in tiers 1-2 (ie almost all of D&D). Your barbarian will seldom have a combat where...

    D&D 5E (2024) Martial/Caster fix.

It doesn’t scale well enough to keep pace with the damage increase that other martial classes got. TBH, I think rogues should be ahead on damage, given that they are behind on survivability. Right now, they are behind in both, and are mediocre scouts. They don’t have a great niche in 2024.

D&D 5E (2024) OAR 10 City State of the Invincible Overlord

So radioactive that, despite my nostalgia for the original, I want nothing to do with this unless there are zero financial ties remaining. And even then…I dunno.

Spoilers Star Wars: Andor season 2

What was most gripping: two episodes spent waiting for Cassian’s captors to finish their Keystone cop routine so he could move on as if nothing happened, observing the mating rituals of the post-Republic elite, or literally watching grass grow while waiting on an Imperial inspection? And did we...

California bill (AB 412) would effectively ban open-source generative AI

Okay, can we not equate LLMs to actual slavery? I assure you, the slaves had it worse, and it's a pretty appalling equivalence to make. Let's have some perspective.

California bill (AB 412) would effectively ban open-source generative AI

Read this article this morning - it's a fascinating perspective on the rise of LLMs from the perspective of natural language processing researchers - basically, all the brilliant scientists who were working on understanding how to give machines language until LLMs broke the field...

The only highlight. Mostly because Dedra is one of the best characters in the franchise.

Spoilers Star Wars: Andor season 2

Okay, I'm three episodes in. Haven't read any of the thread because I want to avoid spoilers...though that is becoming less of a concern, because so far it sucks. Obviously, I've argued at length on this forum that Season 1 is the best Star Wars show since Empire, and possibly the first true...
