Its probably been done, but here is what I would have picked When I think d&d i think of the 80s even though I started playing when 3.5 already came out. These are the kind of covers I want to see.

I'm going to hazard a guess and and say that wizards is still trying to pay the 3d artists rpg pen and paper salary, and not video game salary. If I am wrong, then I apologies. I just know I was very surprised what rpg companies pay artists, and how the pricing is done.

I think its mostly Nostalgia. I don't think its a very good cover (no offense). I would take it in a second over the 4e cover though. I do very much like the logo of the wizard at the bottom right conner though. I would give up my first born for a cover this this good. It just reeks of Boris...

well its a 2 digit number, and Judging by the internet image, it looks like a 20. If you were holding a dice for a camera, and its a two digit number, what other number would you purposefully show?

now are we talking oil and brush, or tablet and painter? theirs alot of impressionist artists who use digital, but they are most likely expensive. Much more then most rpg businesses are willing to spend. Hopefully I am wrong.

I think feystep will be a bit more complicated when we see the actual rules. what we see is a one shot writeup for feystep and doesn't give us the ins and outs. If by some off chance fey step does not make itself clear in 4e, that would be very disappointing.
