Classes ... Much Less Flexible than Advertised

This thread is humorous. There's only 320 pages in this PHB. I'm still keeping my expectations for the flexibility low.

Classes ... Much Less Flexible than Advertised

I'm thinking it'll fall somewhere between 12 and 36. In SWS for comparison the Scoundrel has 17 total powers to choose from in the talent trees. Space is a consideration.

Classes ... Much Less Flexible than Advertised

Heh, unlike the Mona Lisa example that article is not 1/6 of the PHB rogue information. I would guess its over 1/2 easily. Anyhoo, for all the forum emphasis on this preview, my thought is 'did they really playtest this stuff?'

    Why won't you switch?

A capped system. I think you're onto something there GVD. Without the threat of ever-spiraling power creep in 3x, I may actually have a chance at going back and using these splatbooks I detest objectively.

    Why won't you switch?

That's how me and my friends are beginning to feel. Dark Heresy is something we've waited years for someone to make, versus an unproven, overly hyped and possibly unnecessary game edition.

This is shaping up to be the most houseruled Core book ever! I agree with the OP.

Wizards: We want Class Power decks

Oh I remember. Yeash. Those were terrible and hardly convenient IMO. I think mine ended up trashed.

Wizards: We want Class Power decks

Convenience is good yes, but the concept is still bringing the game halfway to something resembling CCG's if you don't need to occasionally flip through your books or write notes on a character sheet anymore. Just call me one of those stodgy gamers.

D&D 4E So, which class will end up being the -Zilla of 4e?

I agree on the cleric issue. They went to so many lengths to make them fun and viable post-1E and 2E that they made them walking gods at higher levels.

    D&D 4E Warhammer fantasy 4E D&D - Proposed House Rules?

Fate points are hardly more effective than the arm's length-list of ways to keep your character from dying in D&D. I definitely agree on the Wizards though!

    D&D 4E Warhammer fantasy 4E D&D - Proposed House Rules?

Coincidentally WHFRP is an option on my table instead of switching to 4e. I agree that WHF is a good setting for PoL and I wouldn't be surprised if the desigers were awfully familiar with GW's fluff. But anyhoo, I like the WHFRP d10 system for its simplicity in that it already does what D&D...

    Why won't you switch?

All of the above sounds good. I find it disturbing how often I read people replying to negative comments about 4E rules with 'house rule it' away. If I have to house rule half the core rules, its not worth my money or time.

AD&D 1E 1E Fiend Folio monsters in 4E Monster Manual!

Weren't Drow technically first in FF?

    Factoring items into balance flawed?

Yes, sadly loss of magic gear ranks even higher on my player's list than character death. 4E will not end this dependance despite them being the first to address it. Only a complete magicless campaign can do this.

    Design & Development: Halflings [merged]

Sorry, I meant w/o the halfling cultural bonuses. Although reduced strength and greater dex (3.5e) seems realistic, the rest I don't know.

    Design & Development: Halflings [merged]

Thanks for the clarification. So the problem with halflings I'm reading is that they are irrelevant/ redundant when there is already a choice to play humans. One may as well play a human child sans all the groovy cultural crunch bonuses? Hmm.

    Squared FireBalls?

Them's the breaks of grid based combat. Other mini games such as WH 40k use circular templates and arent bound by grids. My group has done rather well using the same system for D&D encounters when in open terrain. Works less well in dungeons that tend to be gridded all the time.

    Design & Development: Halflings [merged]

I'm a bit confused with this statement. For instance what archetypal role do humans play in fantasy?

DMG & MM: Players Stay Out?

Exactly. That's why people generally buy (campaign setting) books. I would wager people playing in homebrews enjoy much more sense of discovery and suspense than those where information is shared.

DMG & MM: Players Stay Out?

This priveleged DM information used to be crucial for game settings too. Now every setting book is tailored to both players and DMs. Where are the plot secrets anymore?
