    D&D 5E (2014) 1st Attempt at a CR 20 BBEG+New Race Critique.

I thought so, too, until I worked it out. Defensive CR AC is 22 adjusted to 24 to account for Magic Resistance and then to 26 due to having three saving throw proficiencies. The Superior Heavy Armor Master trait doesn't change anything at this high of a CR. The 256 HP land it at CR 13, which...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

Why are you rewriting the variant encumberance rules that are right there on PHB 176? A Str 20 fighter in plate mail can add only 35 lbs of equipment before his speed drops 10 feet. A shield and longsword are 9 lbs. A longbow and quiver full of arrows are 5 lbs. That doesn't leave much room for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

I would go so far as to argue that just about every problem in the game starts with the DM. The DM dictates everything that happens. Encounters don't occur unless the DM decides they do. NPCs don't exist unless the DM decides they do. The dungeon is laid out exactly the way the DM decides it is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

Yeah, but grappling and especially knocking somebody prone are suboptimal tactics for a party optimized for ranged combat to be using against a group of monsters optimized for melee combat. If the party I'm DMing spent all their ASIs and feats and fighting styles and spells known optimizing for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

As an aside, it is amazing how afraid of incurring an opportunity attack some players are. I know that optimizers have no problem incurring one if the EV is right, but the prospect of taking one leaves some players glued to a spot they really do need to get out of. At any rate, there's no...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

Oh, hahaha, right. How could I forget about Unearthed Arcana, home of nearly countless maybe-playtested ways of breaking a game that has enough problems out-of-the-box!

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

    1) You still have to take Crossbow Expert to get away from the "disadvantage on ranged attack rolls when an enemy is within five feet of you" rule, though. I'm AFB but I don't remember any other way to nullify that. Celtavian didn't mention it, so I'm guessing he didn't park a demon next to that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

Don't forget the house rule that permits casters to concentrate on two spells at the same time as long as one is a buff on another party member. No wonder Celtavian thinks bless is even better than those of us who already realize it's pretty good. He's still allowing his Clerics and Paladins to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

I love puzzles! The cleric 10 and sorcerer 10 have four 5th level slots and six 4th level slots between them. Those two are easy. Unless there's a hidden multiclass here that I missed. So we gotta find two more 5ths and three more 4ths. The paladin 2/bladesinger 8 has one 5th and three 4th...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

I agree with you that the guidelines are just guidelines. I don't want to put words in Hemlock's mouth, though, but to me the problem with the discussion on encounter design in the DMG is the lack of emphasis on the action economy. This is why solo bosses are (usually) a dumb idea. It's also why...

    D&D 5E (2014) Design Debate: 13th-level PCs vs. 6- to 8-Encounter Adventuring Day

And if building those things into her stat block makes her too challenging for other parties? The players learn how to play the game better as they play. They learn what spells are useful when, which feats are traps, which builds can tackle particular challenges more efficiently, how they can...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

Class attack bonus advancement wasn't because of THAC0, though. 3E's Base Attack Bonus did what you're talking about without using THAC0. 5E also does the same thing in a different way: by granting extra attacks to certain classes at certain times instead of increasing to hit bonuses. I...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

I still break out the occasional old-style skill check (roll a d20, if the roll is less than the relevant ability score, you succeed). I'm not really sure why I do this, other than it sometimes seems easier than trying to decide on a DC.

    D&D 5E (2014) Arcana cleric spell selection

As written, no, you must take a 6, 7, 8, and 9. As DM, I'd probably let you take lower level spells. You can still lose the ability to cast it. It's just like a wizard would still always have it in his spellbook after losing the ability to cast it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Aid Spell and Wildshape

"When you transform, you assume the beast's hit points and Hit Dice. When you revert to your normal form, you return to the number of hit points you had before you transformed." - PHB, 67 It would seem to me that if Aid is cast on you and then you wild shape, you do not retain the increased hit...

D&D 5E (2014) Chill touch vs Troll regeneration

Crawford's tweets are official. "Official Rulings Official rulings on how to interpret unclear rules are made in Sage Advice. The public statements of the D&D team, or anyone else at Wizards of the Coast, are not official rulings; they are advice. One exception: the game’s rules manager, Jeremy...

D&D 5E (2014) Chill touch vs Troll regeneration

Isn't Magic Missile supposed to be just one damage roll that is then applied to each dart? EDIT: Here you go. http://www.sageadvice.eu/2015/01/26/bonus-spell-damage/

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell vs Counterspell

That's not what the rule says. Under Casting Time, Bonus Action the rule states: "You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action." (PHB, 202).
