    D&D 5E (2014) Making tortles interesting

It is really inexplicable. I don't like the lifespan on thri-kreen, either, but at least that has some sort of appeal to real life.

D&D 5E (2014) PC races that a DM has specifically excluded from their campaign and why

For as long as I've been a rabid evangelist of limiting the options available to nonhuman PCs, I've always considered myself pretty permissive when it comes to what kind of nonhuman PCs I allow: as long as it's sentient; it's free-willed; it's capable of functioning in a dungeon, on a ship, or...

D&D General Demihumans of Color and the Thermian Argument

It bears little relevance to official TSR/WotC depictions, but as far as I'm concerned dwarves have skin tones ranging from alabaster to onyx (no flesh/earth tones) with hair/beards in the normal human range but often dyed into jewel tones. Men and girls wear their hair and beards longer, more...

D&D General What is your favorite D&D material/products from a small publisher?

For Pathfinder 1e: Rogue Genius Games Genius Guides to the Talented (class) are... well, genius. Dreamscarred Press' Ultimate Psionics, Path of War, and Path of War Expanded. Purple Duck's Prestige Archetypes series. I'd kick myself in the face if I didn't mention Tipsy Tabby's Overhauling...

D&D General Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings of Color

I mean... yeah, at least that much. Like the Drow in 3.0 being differentiated by a rule most tables ignored doesn't count. Pathfinder has the Lashunta who are both +INT but males are +STR/-WIS and females are +CHA/-CON. The Last Sovereign (so, so NSFW) theorizes, but doesn't confirm, that orcs...

    D&D 5E (2014) Making tortles interesting

Basically, in Shroompunk, hammers replace swords as the most common noble/civilian weapons for kappa and for humans... because kappa are both kith's second most common enemy. Kappa knights can indeed belong to the Brotherhood of the Hammer, which gives them a soulknife-like ability to spawn and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Making tortles interesting

I'm really only using the name-- I can't call them koopas, and I can't call them tortles, and I refuse to call them turtlefolk. Kappa is a public domain name for turtle people that nobody can stop me from using. In Shroompunk, befitting their roots, they're a kith of honor-bound knights and...

Thoughts on the rebooted He-Man (Netflix)

I don't have a problem with it, either, but it's alienating a lot of very vocal people, and unless that was the point, I don't see how it's benefiting them. The very obviously astroturfed 25% fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes probably isn't doing them any favors.

Thoughts on the rebooted He-Man (Netflix)

Oh, we're guaranteed more-- that was part one of the first season, not the whole thing.

Thoughts on the rebooted He-Man (Netflix)

She-Ra seemed more at teenage girls than small children. I'd have no problem watching Masters of the Universe: Revelation with my four-year-old daughter, but it was obviously aimed at middle-aged men (and women) who grew up with the original; this does raise some questions about the reasoning...

OSR/older D&D and XP from gold - is there a "proper" alternative?

The nice thing about both XP for treasure and XP for defeating monsters by CR is that they're clean and objective. The XP for goals model I prefer requires the DM to determine (or negotiate) how much total XP any given goal is worth and what percentage of that total any specific achievement...

D&D General Dumb Reasons To Get Booted From a Group.

My grand design was basically Rats of NIMH versus Aliens and The Thing in a cosmetics testing factory. Number of people who've told me that idea sounds way better than the initial reception it... received... kinda fills me with a hankering to try it again with a more sophisticated and...

OSR/older D&D and XP from gold - is there a "proper" alternative?

The reason XP for HP sucks is that it warps the reward structure of the game away from completing the adventure and accomplishing your goals to... you know, nonstop murder. XP for GP mostly works, because whatever else you want to encourage your players to do, you can simply have someone rich...

D&D General Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings of Color

This reminds me of my idea of running a Star Trek Pathfinder game-- not using the PF rules in the Star Trek setting, but recreating the Star Trek species and cultures in a standard Pathfinder pseudo-medieval setting. All of the races (except humans) would be replaced with Star Trek aliens, but...

D&D General Demihumans of Color and the Thermian Argument

I am 1,000% down with weirding up the standard PHB races instead of (or in addition to) adding more weird new races, but it feels like the community at large is pulling very passionately in the other direction-- they seem to be allowed to have abilities and, especially, sensory abilities that...

D&D General Demihumans of Color and the Thermian Argument

Antennae, like Insectare, and cow tails. They are insanely overconfident and reckless, by human standards, for their first couple of centuries... but as they age, they get much, much worse. The actual purpose of chromatic dragons, in the grand scheme of things, is to make sure that elves do not...

    Introductions?

hi welcome What game did you design this new combat system for? I'm asking because I'm curious, but it might also help someone give you better advice where to put it.

D&D General Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings of Color

Yeah, you're right. I'm going to go back and revise this to be less confrontational. EDIT: I'd be interested in hearing your take, now that I'm not trying to tell you how much I'm not. And the fact you consider this a feature, and not an active detriment to the tone of any half-serious...

D&D General Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings of Color

I guess that leaves us at an impasse, then. I'm only three generations removed from Germany, but my exposure to your ancestral culture has been sorely limited, self-directed, and filtered through multiple non-ancestral worldviews before it could reach me. But to me it is sacred, it is vital to...

D&D General Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and Halflings of Color

You're trying to teach your grandmother to steal sheep. Lecturing me about my own religion isn't going to make me more comfortable about something I consider to be an act of appropriation. I've had long conversations about whethere or not valkyries were disir, and thus formerly human... but even...
