D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

Legit. Both this, and your analysis. You want to start another thread?

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

Sure. That argument can be used against any criticism of the rules, existing or proposed; if you can just "come up with your own" rules for separating ancestry and heritage, why do you need the official rules to allow it? (I'm not making that argument. There are good reasons to do it.) I think...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

We don't need Hasbro money. The D&D brand can get all of the marketing we'll ever need from people who'll pay for the privilege. I know it's a pipe dream, but a private holding company that only owned two things (Hasbro stock and cash money) could eventually own enough of both that it could...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

We don't. I'm not trying to slag the developers over at Wizards of the Coast, but you couldn't assemble the dev team of your wildest dreams out of every current and former employee of TSR, WotC, and/or Paizo-- any of their third-parties, any top shelf OSR, anyone-- that could make D&D good...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

I don't really care what the specific limitations in the books are, because I'm going to change them for my games anyway. I just don't want the structure and the precedent of those limitations to be further eroded. I mean, given my preferences, ancestry would be a much more substantial portion...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

In that case, why are you even playing a game with discrete ancestries and classes when there are so many games that would allow to create any character you want, within the parameters of the campaign setting and premise? I mean, honestly, aren't those limitations on your imagination, too...

D&D General please tell me about the old psionic classes?

Man... I saw "old psionic classes" and came in here to say there was only one psionic class in AD&D, the Psionicist. You already got a good breakdown of the 3.X psionic classes. Paizo didn't want to touch 3.5's epic rules, deities and demigods, or psionics with a ten foot pole-- and couldn't...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

... that is exactly new rules. They also imply that these categories can be mixed and matched, which are new rules for creating characters. You don't see how rules whose purpose is to allow players to make characters that combine any ancestry with any other ancestry, or that allow characters of...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

"They were both poisoned. I spent the last few years building up an immunity to iocane powder." I understand the impulse to have rules to distinguish between these aspects, but I think it is both seriously overrated as a worldbuilding priority and mechanically they lead to overcomplicated and...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

I think we need a lot fewer "subraces" in every race we can possibly cut them out of, and more racial options that players can pick-and-choose. The 2014 Hill and Mountain dwarf are perfect examples of how this concept was ridiculous to start with and has been diluted past the point of nonsense...

AD&D 1E AD&D players and referees, what do you think of ascending AC?

Ascending AC and BAB is just common sense. THACO was never that bad, and it was itself a major innovation back in the day... but it no longer sparks joy. It is time to thank it for its service and let it go.

    D&D 5E (2014) 15 Petty Reasons I Won't Buy 5e

That's a problem that's plagued WotC D&D since the earliest days of 4e: violently shoving legacy ideas into the immutable structure of the new rules, into conceptual spaces that they simply do not fit into, with no regard for the core fiction of those concepts. Warlock Templars in Dark Sun...

    D&D 5E (2014) 15 Petty Reasons I Won't Buy 5e

Actually makes sense, if you interpret hit points (and saving throws!) as the quasi-magical force that turns lethal injuries into scrapes and bruises. I still prefer necromancy, but nobody's given a damn about my preferences in decades.

    Who Decides What You Play?

(Existing) Generally, when we don't have a regular game going... we decide that we want to play something, and I decide the kind of system and setting I want to run, and the group usually goes along with it. Sometimes they balk and I go back to the drawing board. Sometimes someone else wants to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

No, all of those people have been laid off. They're unemployed.

D&D 5E (2014) Would you require a roll for this?

If you roll Investigate, you might discover there's a safe behind the painting. If you actually tell the DM that you are picking the painting up and setting it aside, there's no reason to roll Investigate.

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I'll play them if I'm playing with a table that's using them. I plan on buying the books and raiding them for loose content, but otherwise... it doesn't look like it's going to be better than what's already my least favorite version of the game.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Mario and Luigi use their hammers in most of the RPG entries. Peach has an intelligent parasol, which enhances her control over fire, water, and wind. They seem to have both weapon and non-weapon magical abilities, which is how I would prefer a Magus/Swordmage to function.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Particularly relevant to my interests? Mario and Luigi, Princess Peach (MC Cleric, Bard, or even Paladin), Link, many of the characters or Jobs/Classes in Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star. Gambit and Magik of the X-Men. If you want to get self-referential about it, Deedlit.
