D&D 5E (2014) Why is no one talking about THE BOOK OF MANY THINGS?

On a lark I recently bought myself the Book of Many Things. It's weird, wonderful, and utterly unlike any other book in 5E. Does anyone else here have it? What do you think of it?

D&D 5E (2024) Leomunds Tiny Hut Blew Up In Their Face.

I hate this spell almost as much as rope trick.

    D&D 5E (2024) The Ray Winninger Era of D&D 5e

Interesting thread. Winninger's tenure included some real gems--Wild Beyond the Witchlight, Book of Many Things, Keys from the Golden Vault, etc. These are quirky, inventive, delightful books. But it struggled to deliver old school, meat-and-potatoes core D&D. Sometimes you want the classic...

D&D General Need help with Doomed Sword Coast campaign

In a campaign setting where the big bad guys won...I don't think you need to introduce yet another big bad guy like Vecna. Just let the PCs loose on the bad guys you've already got. The last thing a premise like this needs is further complication or yet another flavor of evil.

D&D 5E (2014) 2024 Monster Manual has better lore than 2014 Monster Manual

"We need more lore" just doesn't resonate with me. First, in general I like design that says "this is how it could be" vs "this is how it is". That's why I prefer the random tables of 2024 MM or settings like the 4E Neverwinter Campaign Setting. Second, there's 50 years of lore from previous...

D&D General What modules have you reused for multiple campaigns

I'm kind of jealous of those of you who have run the same adventure (or campaign) multiple times. I have a pretty consistent group and so I tend not to repeat campaigns. I had a long campaign where the middle section used most of Storm King's Thunder. I'd love the chance to rework and replay...

D&D 5E (2014) 2024 Monster Manual has better lore than 2014 Monster Manual

Many people have noted that the descriptions in the 2024 MM are shorter than the 2014 MM. The general feeling seems to be that less lore = worse lore. But I'm finding the random tables added to most entries are great inspiration -- inspiration for roleplaying monsters and kickstarting...

    D&D 5E (2024) Mob Rules

I'm currently playing a 13th Age campaign, which uses "mooks" -- what 4E calls "minions" and I guess 5E calls "mobs". Anyway. They're a lot of fun. The coolest part is spillover damage. If a mook has 10 hit points and you do 25 damage, you kill two mooks and wound a third. What can make...

    I was waiting for that.

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

I'm not sure if this answers the OP or not... I really like spellcasting in Shadow of the Demon Lord/Weird Wizard. It's grouped around themes. So there's necromancy, fire magic, air magic, healing, time magic, rune magic, etc. If you're a spellcaster, you get to pick a limited number of themes...

D&D 5E (2014) Which was the most recent Wizards adventure you consider a classic?

The two stone cold classics in the 5E period are Curse of Strahd and Wild Beyond the Witchlight. And both of them have the strongest authorial voice. Coincidence? Maybe not.

D&D 5E (2014) Ranger: House rule to fix Hunter's Mark

That damage scaling seems fast. I don't have direct experience with a 2024 Ranger but what I've seen on YouTube suggests that the Ranger is powerful in Tier 1 but fails to keep up at higher levels. The target switching idea is really interesting. I wouldn't remove the ability to switch targets...

    D&D 5E (2024) What's In D&D's New Starter Set?

This video shows footage of the actual set being previewed at the New York Toy Fair. (Hopefully this link previews OK.) This Starter Set is totally unlike anything WotC has released before. I love it. You might hate it. But it's not for us. It's obviously meant for people who have...

D&D 5E (2024) Help me make a cool Worg villain.

Yeah, I think the canon is kind of weird and I don't put much weight into it in my campaigns. However, the flavor text in 5E says that goblins often serve the barghest in hopes it will not devour their souls. So there's some good opportunity there for intrigue between the barghest and the...

D&D 5E (2024) Help me make a cool Worg villain.

I believe so. AC 17, 90 HP, damage resistance, telepathy, blindsight, and spells like dimension door, pass without trace, charm person, suggestion, minor illusion, levitate. I'd probably give it multiattack and perhaps 1 or 2 legendary actions to be a capable solo monster.

D&D 5E (2024) Help me make a cool Worg villain.

You might be looking for a barghest. It's a shapechanger that switches between a goblin and an oversized wolf (could be easily reskinned to a worg). It's CR4. There are online stat blocks for a greater barghest if you need more of a challenge.

    D&D 5E (2014) Just Finished a Lv.1 thru Lv.20 Campaign -- Ask Me Anything

For me, the game starts to get ultra gonzo around level 13, when 7th level spells come online. In future campaigns, I'll talk to the spellcaster players and see what we can do to make it all a little less absurd. At higher levels, combat dragged with 5 players. With 3 players, it never dragged...
