    D&D 5E (2014) Vicious Dagger question

Really? Sneak attack are doubled? Religiously significant effluvium! Rogues just get better and better!

    D&D 5E (2014) Vicious Dagger question

Thanks for the replies! Some legalese wording in there that I hadn’t considered @billd91 @DEFCON 1 - if something does +X dmg ‘on a crit’ then would it be considered as extra ie dagger d4 doubled/rolled twice for the crit, then add the ‘+2d6’ afterwards (like sneak attack), or am I getting it...

    D&D 5E (2014) Vicious Dagger question

Hive mind, help! Vicious Dagger does 7 extra damage “when you roll a 20”. Would you rule that it would deal its extra damage on an improved critical (eg L4 Champion Fighter on a 19 or 20)? (I have a gnome MC Fighter/Rogue in my game who likes to TWF fight with two daggers and thought would be...

    AD&D 1E Giving an AD&D feel to 5e

Not adding much, just an observation. A big difference from flicking through my old AD&D and B/X modules, is the expectation of a party having hirelings to bulk them out/act as cannon fodder. It’s just not a thing in 5e; the reason being, I think, because 5e PCs are just more capable from the...

D&D 5E (2024) bring back the pig faced orcs for 6th edition, change up hobgoblins & is there a history of the design change

You could always go more folkloric with hobgoblins (a la Dragon Warriors) and have them be slightly fey creatures with magic puffballs and possibly two heads. Transfer the whole ‘soldier goblins who fight in formation well’ be a goblin trait, instead. That’ll surprise people; finding out...

D&D 5E (2014) The -10 Myth: How a Poorly-Worded Gygaxian Rule Became the Modern Death Save

So, it’s if you are dropped to between 0 and -3 in one blow you’re able to have that extra slow drip of HP loss, but if the blow drops you to -4 or more that’s it? interesting! I always played it as -10 buffer zone. Thank you for the clarity!

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Oh do you know, I’ve never thought of Crits for save-spells. I guess a Nat 1 would qualify. I always check with my table if they’re happy to use my crit system because it applies to the monsters too! A lot of save-spells could theoretically include a crit fail = max damage, I guess. Hmm. Thinking.

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

So, for Crits I use (max die damage)+(roll+mods). This will be important. Today, four PCs in Thundertree decide to go against Venomfang. Two go as emissaries, two sneak up to the roof. While the emissaries are blowing smoke up his scaly ass, the two above strike! Monk attacks twice, Arcane...

    Lex Arcana

Hi all. I am sorely tempted by Lex Arcana but seems pricey - has anyone got any experience of the game that can share their thoughts? TIA Grassy

    OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play BECM/RC D&D? How Was/Is It?

One other thing: the thing that killed AD&D for me, was the Forgotten Realms box set. I was so excited for it and then I read through the books and you know what, it felt like I was reading someone else’s campaign (which is, let’s face it, basically what it was). It didn’t feel ‘mine’ and I in...

    OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play BECM/RC D&D? How Was/Is It?

Oh, should’ve added; played Basic and Expert, nudged Companion but I’d got AD&D (because it was ‘grown up’ by just before then so switched but honestly never played a fraction as much AD&D as BEC(MI).

    OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play BECM/RC D&D? How Was/Is It?

Literally just started a BECMI game using the In Search of Adventure compilation module today! Been hankering for a blast of simpler times, and as Red Box was my introduction to RPGs (after Fighting Fantasy game books), I remember loving how you could focus on the RP due to the lack of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizards planning a change to lycanthropes?

Could it be with a view to more televisual iterations of D&D (eg, movie, tv shows)? Regeneration can be easily shown on screen, with cuts closing up etc; resistance less so, being more of a function of game mechanics/character sheet.

    D&D Movie/TV Update on D&D TV Show -- Underdark, Small, 6-10 Episodes

It will be about a drow of matchless speed who’s really cross at having to worship Lolth and be the bad guy, so he leaves the Underdark and comes out on a different plane - our world - a place of neon lights and honour, swords and sushi. That’s right. its... The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drizzt

D&D 5E (2014) Next (3rd book of the year) endless speculation thread

They could go down the DL route for the movie in which case DL would feature highly and likely be launched pre-movie too to build hype and recognition of the synergy between the two ‘brands’.

    D&D 5E (2014) The mathematics of D&D–Damage and HP

This is the rough framework I use if it’s any help or use Meat A character’s ‘meat’ hit points is always the same: starting HP (inc CON mod). The rest is skill, luck, etc. Any damage taken below that level is wound damage. Any damage of that amount or more is described as a wound. Thus...

    D&D 5E (2014) The mathematics of D&D–Damage and HP

Thanks all. It’s a bit tiresome at times isn’t it? Part of me wishes you could just run a Deadliest Warrior type algorithm (bearing in mind it looks mighty like an Excel sheet!) and then narrate the story of the battle. Obviously magic messes with that somewhat, and reduces agency esp for...

    D&D 5E (2014) The mathematics of D&D–Damage and HP

Wrong thread I’m guessing, as this seems to be a maths session, but I have a question on narrating HP specifically for missile damage. Ie if HP is partly meat, partly attrition, this works for melee combat (wearing down opponent over time, the grunt and shove of close combat - not necessarily a...

    D&D 5E (2014) A different take on Alignment

I guess that’s my point. It is possible to decouple the planes/afterlife from alignment? Could you instead replace them with, as my example, the domains. Celestial is the ‘skin’ for, eg Light domain. Etc. if there’s a discussion about different ways of doing alignment in DnD, why not consider...

    D&D 5E (2014) A different take on Alignment

As David Mitchell said in the Nazi sketch, “Are...are we the baddies?” In other words, it is rare especially on the macro (societal) level for a person to believe (realise?) they are evil. Their actions are usually predicated on their view of what is good. Law and Chaos is a staple from ... I...
