    D&D 4E Let's Talk About 4E On Its Own Terms [+]

Unfortunately, I think most of the official ones are just not great for 4e without some work. They almost all suffer from too many encounters in a row, leaving little room for plot development/other stuff. EN World Zeitgeist is the only one that I know of that plays to all of 4e's strengths...

    D&D 4E [Orcus/4e] House rules - including a skill challenge replacement

Love to see where you end up. I think more types of systems available the better as sometimes one structure fits better than another depending on the situation you are trying to model. 2 further comments: 1) I'd try to get permission to include Stalker's Obsidian skill challenge as an...

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

Yeah, easy respec and multiclasses don't help. Disallowing multi class would help a little I guess, but I don't think that much. I had a Sorc 12 that never bothered to go SorLok and it still crushed. Adding Thief to Monk is a nice kicker but Monk 12 with tavern brawler and elixirs and items...

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

Long rests are essentially possible after almost every fight and definitely after every 3 fights. There are a few exceptions where an area is blocked from returning to camp (although many of those you can just walk out of the blocked area and come back), and there are only a few times where...

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

I'm ok with that if it's like 1 per character. Maybe 2. I think it is cool to have a sword with elemental damage, that can haste you, and gives you a pseudo feat or something. But in BG3 every item is like this. You armor has like 4 properties, your helmet adds 1-2, your boots, etc.

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

Yep I had a Open Hand Monk 8 / Thief 4 with Tavern Brawler. Don't forget the ability to use plentiful all day Hill Giant strength elixirs (and sometimes Cloud Giant) on that Monk so you can dump strength and pump Con and Wis for some juicy stun saves (and personal saves against getting taken...

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

Just finished on Tactician. Enjoyed it a lot, but I'd say almost all deviations from standard 5e seemed not so good to me. Maybe levels 1-3 or 4 there was some challenge but after that I think combat was way way too easy. Chief offenders are things that are deviations from my usual table top...

    D&D 3.x The 4E We Didnt Get.

SWSE would have been a pretty good base to make a 4e some of which did make it into 4e. I liked: no saving throws condition track talents and talent trees with prerequisite talents basically showed a way to tier martial abilities most of the classes were non magic (force) so showed a lot of...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

I'd rather call that connection something else. If that was the definition, I don't think the most immersion is necessarily the best goal. For me the desired immersion is more about "does the game easily allow for in fiction situations that emulate the type of character actions, situations...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

Yeah, I would argue that 4e actually does a pretty good job at a certain type of verisimilitude. When you are talking about "do the mechanics support in game fiction that emulates heroic fantasy". For some people "roleplaying" and "imerseiveness" is highly tied to characters abilities that...

    D&D 5E (2014) We Would Hate A BG3 Campaign

I would have left the hobby long ago if I encountered this stuff regularly. Have a discussion with all parties and come to some acceptable solution for all (common in my experience) or walk away if you feel like you are not going to get enjoyment out of this volunteer leisure actively (as...

    D&D 5E (2014) We Would Hate A BG3 Campaign

Yeah, I don't get it either. Sometimes DMs and players/DM curate options for a setting or campaign. And sometimes that curation won't be liked equally by everyone. I mean how this plays out should be basic adult conversation. Perhaps the next campaign will feature gnomes. Perhaps the...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

There is another way though. 1. Hit points have been restored, indicating that the character is farther away from being "taken out" 2. Characterize the restoration in terms of the amount of hit points recovered versus the total hit points remaining and/or their maximum hit points. If hit...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

No, not at all. My argument is that if people aren't willing to embrace that playstyle / framework that makes the most sense, then 4e will create lots of nonsensical situations so probably not a good system for them If people say "for 4e to make sense it requires a playstyle that I am not used...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

I'm not doubting that for some people it is a gap. What I'm and I assume others on this thread are arguing is that: 1) this work to bridge the gap in some people's mind I believe is real and I understand how that could prevent people from liking 4e. if you can't approach 4e with certain...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

Yeah fair enough. Epic should be doing epic stuff and surviving epic things. And they do. But I think it still points to hit points being a measure of being closer or farther from being “taken out” than any specific interpretation of damage or injury level.

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

I can't speak to xianxia, but even in "epic fantasy" I don't see heroes actually "taking" such incredible damage. Damage avoidance and mitigation seem much more common in genre. Rather than heroes getting their flesh melted off and regenerating or getting all their neck, limbs, and ribs...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

Yeah, I agree with your posts in general. Also 4e could have been better explained. And honestly, I'm not even sure the designers knew what they were making as a whole at launch either. But at this point who cares, right? There is at least one paradigm of interpreting the rules that makes...

I want my actions to matter

I'm always intrigued by these threads. I'm not saying I've never ran into any of the issues where DM and players (or between player) expectations are mismatched leading to bad gaming. But some of these read like this has been going on for years or forever? I don't think I'd continue playing...

Yep, it does what it said it was going to do. And what it says on the tin. But that’s not always true!
