In Defence of Chickens - DCC RPG (OOC)

Alright kids. Yolo is trying to pull the brass doors open at the same time that Ranken is trying to put the bar back in place. @jmucchiello- are you trying to stop him?

Why do Americans pronounce centaurs "centars"???

I imagine they're using a fair bit of oregano and basil in some meals

Why do Americans pronounce centaurs "centars"???

If I try to imagine someone saying 'claustrophobic" in a Midwest accent it sounds a bit like 'ah'. I can't get my head around 'plahsible' though. Important point to bear in mind here is that we don't actually all hear the same sounds as each other. Depending on the languages and dialects to...

Why do Americans pronounce centaurs "centars"???

From England, originally. I have a bit of a funny regional accent, but I don't think I say 'au' unusually for British English.

Why do Americans pronounce centaurs "centars"???

The problem with doing examples that way, is you're assuming we pronounce all these other words the same. To me, the 'au' in all but one of the above sounds just like the one in 'centaur' and 'dinosaur'. Claustrophobia is the only odd one out. And for that I'd use an 'o' sound, not an 'ah'...

D&D General D&D Combat is fictionless

I was looking for a pompous name to describe something that was neither theatre of the mind, nor gridded.

Why do Americans pronounce centaurs "centars"???

You say 'wrong'. I've opted to maintain and promote all of my misunderstandings. Divergent pronunciations must all have gotten started somewhere. Being the handsome and charismatic genius that I am, I figure that is I just double down on my way of saying things, someone will pick it up. I'm...

Why do Americans pronounce centaurs "centars"???

From the same place as the American spelling, funnily enough. The word was coined by Humphry Davy, who used at least three different spellings in different publications (alumium, aluminum, aluminium). Not sure if he was indecisive or just forgetful.

Why do Americans pronounce centaurs "centars"???

The thing about pretend-elf games, is that they are full of words that, outside the context of a pretend-elf game, lots of people will never hear said aloud. As a result, idiosyncratic pronunciations are common. I hear all sorts of fascinating variations from my online group (some of whom are...

D&D General What is an Adversarial Player?

Jim's got a negative Constitution modifier and rolled a 1 for HP at every level. They should probably stop letting him wander off by himself.

D&D General D&D Combat is fictionless

No, he was right. I play sans Grille. I don't understand why people use grids. Just choose a conversion factor between feet and inches or centimetres, and then move the models or counters with a tape measure. If you're using a VTT you don't even need that, measurement is all built in. I don't...

D&D General DMs: where's your metagaming line?

Personally, I'd say it makes it much harder to run a game if doing so involves having to worry about whether or not the players will pretend not to remember something they read on the Monster Manual. But I also think we're playing very different games. A game without a win condition isn't much...

D&D General Why are "ugly evil orcs" so unpopular?

While this is not really what I think was going on in old DnD since, as you say, there was no evil alignment then, there is a fictional tradition in which orcs are seen as chaotic and destructive, but not really evil. This is what you ended up with in Warhammer. Humans and elves and dwarves can...

D&D General DMs: where's your metagaming line?

This I find a bit odd. Metagaming doesn't really bother me. I think it's silly to expect people to make bad decisions in some weird attempt to pretend not to know things that they, in fact, know. But if I had to pick a line I guess it would be 'if I'm running a pre written adventure, don't...

D&D General D&D Combat is fictionless

I like it, but we're not using it for gridded combat. I am tired of hearing people debate between 'theater of the mind' and getting out the grid, as if these are the only options. I cannot be the only person in the world who owns a tape measure and is thus able to use miniatures without a grid...

D&D General D&D Combat is fictionless

Hackmaster as a whole is full of overly complex, simulationist rules, yes. But the basic component I'm talking about here, of using simultaneous, second-by-second actions instead of taking turns, does not need to be very complex at all. If I roll an attack on second 7, and my weapon has an...

How do you keep your GM notes?

Probably. But it's hard to compare to something I haven't experienced. I think things would be better if I kept better notes, but I don't honestly know how much better. Sometimes characters change names because I forgot the name I made up previously, but I don't really think my players notice...

How do you keep your GM notes?

Bits of paper. And word documents. And in character sheets in roll20. And in a message on Discord. Basically it's a big mess and I lose stuff all the time. And then the players will vast Identify on a magic item I forgot about months ago. In the worst case scenarios I find myself sneaking looks...

    D&D General Time in RPGs

I used to be really diligent in tracking time. I have a little piece of paper where I could move counters along in different increments (there's a combat round section, a minute section, a minute section etc depending on what was happening). I fell out of the habit because, a lot of the time, it...
