D&D 5E (2014) Just About Sick Of Darkvision.

I have to say I completely agree with the OP here. I'd take the current Darkvision away from every non-Underdark dwelling race, and certainly all PC races, and house rule it down into something like the "Dimvision" idea others have floated. (half range of sight, disadvantage on perception, etc.)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-Scaling Class Specialties: Why Choose Them?

I agree with emdw45 on this. I like when monsters are fought to character. A band of Hobgoblins led by a Hob Captain out-maneuvering PC's and concentrating fire on the wizard first? Most definitely. A mob of zombies or twig blights accurately targeting the PC with the lowest AC? Not really...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-Scaling Class Specialties: Why Choose Them?

Most definitely. I recently played a HotDQ/RoT as a Fighter with the Defense style, and this is what I noticed most. That extra +1 to AC didn't seem like much when it stopped the single measly attack from some kobold, but when it lets me escape one or two of that dragons claws, it really feels...

D&D 5E (2014) Full list of official advantage / disadvantage situations?

There are likely a thousand things missing. The idea is that Adv/Dis is a simple mechanic that the DM can impose anytime they feel it makes sense. "Nah, that Halfling's still greased up from getting thrown into the barrel of cod oil; you have disadvantage on that grapple." "I'll give you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Grind-out fights, unconscious heroes, and retreat

I love it, too. When all of the PC's are tied up with keeping back the monster horde, and it's up to you to make those rolls count and cheat death, it's pretty nerve-wracking. Even when it's your comrade across the table trying to stay alive, it's exciting. It's also a way for the player to feel...

D&D 5E (2014) I think WotC has it backwards (re: story arcs)

I'm a long time Sci-fi/fantasy nerd who always wanted to get into D&D but didn't for various reasons. I have a feeling there are a ton of people out there like me. I got into 5E because it was relatively cheap and simple to do so. 20 bucks for a Starter Set got me everything I needed to jump...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's your favorite race/class combination?

Human Fighter. I like the idea of a person who, in a world of magic and creatures with strange abilities, gets by on a combination of grit and hard-won skill.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking with a warhorse

I'd house rule it this way. A warhorse is trained for mounted combat, but most PC's aren't. Trained mounts respond to signals and an untrained PC doesn't know the necessary signals and riding skills to direct it effectively. If the PC has a warhorse (or other mount likely to know how to take...

D&D 5E (2014) Flight ability: Does this make the Aarakocra overpowered?

It's got a lot of advantages, but it's going to be useless in a lot of situations, too. If your party is traversing a goblin cave with ten foot ceilings and tiny tunnels that force Medium creatures to crawl, Fly-Guy isn't going to be too impressive. If your party is up against any creature that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Two Weapon Fighting Doubts

Roll the 'main hand' attack first, add the relevant modifier. Roll the 'off hand' attack second, add no modifier. Pretend whatever you want in the meantime.

    D&D 5E (2014) Any Great 5e One-Offs people would reccomend?

Another vote for the Adventurers League, here. Every adventure is set up for 1st-4th level characters, balanced to be about a single 4-hour session long, stat blocks included for all enemies, etc. I keep a printed copy of Defiance in Phlan on hand for new players; it's got a good mix of short...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do you use them? Are they necessary?

Honestly, an argument could be made that the Ability Score Increases are more OP and game unbalancing than the Feats. At level 6, my standard array human fighter could a) know a few tricks with a shield (Shield Master) and be good at taking advantage of any drop in his enemies guard (Sentinel)...

D&D 5E (2014) Feats: Do you use them? Are they necessary?

Feats are fun ways to build a niche character. They certainly aren't necessary, but I don't see any reason to ban them. They're certainly not OP when compared to +1 in one or two Ability Scores, so they're not game breakers. I love 'em. One cool way of using them is to give out magical items...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running away...

I agree with Paul, just let your player tell you what they want to do, then make up a DC or a contested ability check. Your PC wants to body check the guard onto his ass and keep running? Contested Athletics check. Your PC wants to baseball slide through the guards legs? Contested check...

D&D 5E (2014) Why such little content (books) for Dnd 5e?

One thing I'd like to point out is that having a mountain of material is a bit off-putting to prospective new players. If all I have to do to start playing is grab a PHB and join a game, I'm much more likely to give it a try. If I need dozens of splatbooks just to stay relevant and know what's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running away...

You CAN block a door, but others can also shove past/ deftly dodge past you if they are strong or agile enough. That's more realistic than an infallible, immoveable guard, in my opinion.

D&D 5E (2014) In your opinion, what is the most underrated spell in the PHB and why?

^ Good choice. I've only played a caster once thus far, and that was a druid in a one shot, but I thought Thorn Whip was boss. Lots of battlefield control, and when combined with area affect spells like spike growth or tactical use of terrain, lots of potential for extra damage.

D&D 5E (2014) Why such little content (books) for Dnd 5e?

Personally, I'd rather they stay the course they're on right now. Keep the core books valid by refusing to shower us with splatbooks, toss out some Unearthed Arcana every now and again for flavor, churn out a big adventure module a couple times a year. If I could bend things to my personal...
