    Shadow Magic

Wow I haven't touched these in a while! Thank you for rekindling this. I somewhat agree with you and here are some of my tweaks: Ward of Shadow * Target gains +1d4 up to three times to saving throws against cold and necrotic damage for the duration of the spell. After the third use, the ward...

Check Out DRIZZT DO'URDEN'S 5E Character Sheet!

Oh God, it has begun! Run! Run while you still can!

    Shadow Magic

Shadow magic was a very fun aspect of 2nd Edition AD&D, and from what I've seen online, there were even third edition versions of it as well. Some examples: Shadow Monsters (4th Level Illusion/Phantasm) Shadow Door (5th Level Illusion/Phantasm) Shadow Magic (5th Level Illusion/Phantasm)...

    AD&D 2E Leveling Up in 2E

This isn't by the book, but our group was pretty generous with the XP. Our DM used to figure out how much we would need to level up determine for themselves how epic they felt things should be, and would create a story with various 'checkpoints.' Each checkpoint, no matter how we got there, was...

    D&D 5E (2014) Your favorite campaign you've never run

Funny you should say that, I'm working on a campaign world that is EXACTLY that. I haven't finalized the mapping yet, but the general premise is that a world is being overrun by the undead. Vampires and liches lead massive armies of ghouls, skeletons, and zombies -- as well as shadows, wraiths...

    D&D 5E (2014) Your favorite campaign you've never run

This is a genius topic. Honestly? 2e AD&D Dragon Mountain. I would LOVE to run that. Sadly my box set of it got destroyed in a flood - but the concept of it was genius. I still smile thinking about what my old group would have done with those Kobolds. Though I'm sure the swearing would be...

    Lovecraftian Gug for 5e

Your first link (just the "gug") doesn't work right - other than that, I love them! Very well put together!

    D&D 5E (2014) Low AC for Monsters

Personally if a creature is going to be the main opponent of the PCs, I always beef them up. Shield spells, magical items, intelligent combat tactics (i.e. anything a Bond villain would do? They don't do it), etc etc. However, if the players are just out and about and WHAM! Red Dragon! I'd...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Victorian-Era, Minimal-Steampunk, Dead Magic, Mainly Roleplaying, Tabletop Game for a friend's girlfriend.

This is a genius idea, and the DMG even has rules for firearms - so you could have a party of gunslingers going out to deal with some bandits or some such - when selling it to her, just say it's essentially every John Wayne Western! :) Actually this gives me some good ideas as well.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Victorian-Era, Minimal-Steampunk, Dead Magic, Mainly Roleplaying, Tabletop Game for a friend's girlfriend.

Interesting problem - and one I don't have a lot of experience with. My gaming group was started in, and led by, leadership within my Church (I was born and raised as a Unitarian Universalist - still am too!). We never had a problem with being accused of being sinful... because the person who...

    D&D 5E (2014) All New Mystara Player's Handbook

The Mystara boxed sets from 2nd Ed AD&D were some of my favorite! Thank you for this!

DnD books (not settings) of older editions that are useful regardless of edition!

2nd Edition: Creative Campaigning or any of the other Blue/Green/Brown books - Even if you don't want kits or other rules, the descriptions are very useful. 2nd Edition: PO: Spells & Magic, Combat & Tactics - Again, you don't have to use the books for the point buy system - but they are full...

    Feudalism for D&D; Part 2

I did not actually know any of that! Wow! I've been reading those books for what feels like ages! My sister gave me her copy way back in either 97 or 98. And never realized that the story was based off of that. Is that a direct quote from Elizabeth Moon too? Or just speculation based on...

    Feudalism for D&D; Part 2

I had one thought regarding the section on knights sole purpose to be to die, causing a call for heroes. In your world design, have the local leadership be focused on a larger threat to the realm. If all the knights must be ready to go to war with the orc hoards, or the enemy kingdom, they won't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Best Armor in D&D

I like my characters to be merchants - so I usually wear scale mail. That way I am always ready to weigh coins on my scales, and make sure they're really gold.

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

I think we can all agree that, in the event of a zombie apocalypse, we'd all switch to LARPing with real weapons... :D

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

I came completely to the opposite conclusion - though for a different reason: I think what you are saying is that understanding why someone likes something helps with understanding them. And you're right to an extent. However, I find that the why usually dissolves into an effort to "Prove" why...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

Solipsism is not my goal. I was hampered by my desire for simplicity due to my awareness of 1) I'm not writing a thesis, and 2) we're bordering on what some might mistake as edition wars. Actually, the direction I was aiming for was Wittgenstein's "Language City" applied to gaming. For...

D&D 5E (2014) what is it about 2nd ed that we miss?

And what is good, or valuable, is only knowable to the gamer in question. I don't dispute that - I just dispute anyone saying any particular thing is a universal constant. Your second sentence sums up the true purpose of any debate on the merit of a rules system in a game. It's meaningless...
