New SCAG Info: Someone Got The Book

Nice. My version had Charisma boosted but was otherwise the same. Easily fixed.

[ENDED] Contest! Create Your Sci-Fi Character With [WOIN] Future Careers!

I forgot about that PDF. I'll have to add those in. It's a character I've had tumbling around in my head for a science fiction setting for a year or two now (originally envisaged for a unique set of rules, then D&D 5th edition and now N.E.W.). I wanted to create him specifically to see how many...

[ENDED] Contest! Create Your Sci-Fi Character With [WOIN] Future Careers!

Here's my test character. Let me know if you spot any mistakes. I will note that my rolls for health were ridiculously unlucky. For my cinematic HP calculations I rolled for 1s! Jake Lance is a grizzled stoic human ex-spy who has a dark sense of humor. STR 3 (2d6) AGI 6 (3d6) END 2 (1d6) INT 7...

D&D 5E (2014) Enforcing theme/structure by saying NO to players

I don't have complaints. I explain ahead of time what is (and isn't) available for play and I don't run the game for anyone who isn't interested. This might mean running it for a different set of players, someone else running a different game or me running a different game.

D&D 5E (2014) Is the Noble class a good Warlord substitute?

I saw this thread and figured I should weigh in on this discussion given I've been championing the Noble so much of late. The reason for my proselytizing is due to the fact I'm seeing people say "Warlords simply can't work in 5e ever" or "I really want a Warlord and would love to play one." I've...

How 3D Printing is Upending the Miniature Industry

I'm torn as to trying to prophesy how this will go. Book stores do very much seem to be closing down more than they are opening up, but this has been the case for years now. The death of the book store is a protracted and long event that I can't help but wonder if they will never die. Music...

    [TRAILseeker #32] The Tactician

Hooray! I've been waiting for this to get published. This was a really fun project to work on. It's essentially an archetype that replicates the Unchained Monk with the fighter. It swaps out most (though not all) of the fighter class features and then let's you select the ones you want a la...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Warlord [No, really, I don't know.]

Explaining why the warlord needs to be non-magical is like explaining why the wizard needs to be magical. Without that part, your no longer playing a warlord but are instead playing yet another spellcaster. Reflavouring can be great for those who like it, but for me it would be wholly...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Warlord [No, really, I don't know.]

At it's heart the Warlord is a martial (non magical*) who supports his allies on the battlefield and deals minimal damage of his own. That's the core concept (IMO). Mechanically it should cover the basic cleric role abilities so that the "healing-spellcaster" role is optional rather than...

Here's The First Chapter of O.L.D.!

Apologies for the double post but I've read through the first chapter and I'm definitely interested in it. It looks like it will handle Dark Sun and Forgotten Realms equally well. I like the idea of flatter progression as there is less "your character has stopped advancing at this point." It...

Last D&D Survey Results In! Plus What's Up With The Ranger?

During 4e (the first edition I played) I bought most of the first party products (until Essentials) and a smattering of 3PP products. With 5e I'm doing the opposite. I'm buying a lot more 3PP products and much less 1PP products. When I look at all the books I bought for 4e and never used, I am...

Here's The First Chapter of O.L.D.!

Congratulations. The layout and graphics have been completed to a quality finish that would belong in any top tier company's product line. I'll be interested to see how this compares with Pathfinder and D&D and what type of stories it might enable that would differentiate it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

CR for me is a warning flag. Monsters with a higher CR than the players -may- be capable of one shotting PCs or -may- have abilities which could be impossible for players to deal with. But I then follow that up with actually checking the damage the monsters are capable of and look at what...

D&D 5E (2014) Open Interpretation Inspirational Healing Compromise.

I'd heartily recommend EN5ider's noble class. It doesn't have a magical version, but it does have subclasses that allow all of the traditional archetypes. I'm thinking of playing a Drow Noble with the lazy lord archetype.

Here Come The PRESTIGE CLASSES! Plus Rune Magic!

I think I can articulate why I don't like this idea. 1) There is virtuallyno flavour attached with it (no more so than finding a magic item). 2) These runes are semi-magical items and allegedly balance according to those guidelines. Except I know the value of a 5th level spell slot. There is no...

Here Come The PRESTIGE CLASSES! Plus Rune Magic!

Feats are at most 4 levels away. So if they got this at level 4, then sure, they have to wait four levels. But with a PrC they have to wait (however long it takes to find the person to train them) + (however long it takes to get the required mechanics). This could be 4 or 8 levels anyway...

Here Come The PRESTIGE CLASSES! Plus Rune Magic!

This is an important thing to keep an eye on. Multiclassing rules work great for ensuring that characters who specialise in a class appropriate area remain the best in that area. The Rune Scribe isn't stepping on anyone's toes as near as I can see, but it's also a very underwhelming class as...

Here Come The PRESTIGE CLASSES! Plus Rune Magic!

I don't know that a sufficiently large portion of the player base make up such a segment. There is always the comments box for those who have such a strong reaction. I personally can't imagine any option that could be added to a game I was already enjoying [that would stop me from playing]. It...

Here Come The PRESTIGE CLASSES! Plus Rune Magic!

Fortunately WotC will be producing a survey to gauge reactions to PrCs and this specific one so they'll have some data to indicate how much of the audience dislike PrCs. The surveys of course aren't perfect, but are better than nothing (which is what they currently have).
