Knowledge God's tests and trials - brainstorm (Fantasy RPG)

I think it might depend on the god...like god of "knowledge" as in accumulated facts or as in smarts/intelligence. For the first, its gonna be trivia and quotes from the ancient wise ones or something. Similarly, arcana would be a hot topic for this guy, I would think. For the second, puzzles...

D&D 5E (2014) Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

I'm not quite sure how to parse the above....So forgive me if I got your position wrong. Yes, I think magic is important (for D&D as a brand, not me personally) to be pretty much "locked in". Not only because so much of the game mechanically hinges on HP/damage, etc., but because of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Skills and Ability Checks -- Perspective on Consistency vs DM Empowerment

Actually, I think you don't have that quite right. Attribute checks are important to 5e, but it is also important that they be flexible between different tables. I think it was one area that they found (through the playtest experimentation and other feedback) that groups didn't want or need that...

Narrative Games - three very distinct categories

I haven't played (or even read) Apocalypse World itself, but I have read and played several of its descendants. I also am very picky about my thinking on "story game" vs "Narrative rpg". Maybe I'm crazy, too. In any case, I don't see how the PbtA engine actually drives "Story" vs. driving...

D&D General Mechanics you DO want to see return

Not having read the rest of the thread.... I'd like to see more "skillsy" things, saves, etc. wrapped back into classes, and away from the modern "ability scores are everything" framework. Nowadays, I'm feeling like even AD&D is too ability-score dependent. With choosing Background, Race, and...

Narrative Games - three very distinct categories

I'm not sure exactly how to respond to this.... I guess I've seen too many implementations of these rulesets (at least the core mechanics) that break these assumptions. Nor am I at all sure that the "opposite sides of the traditional gaming" thing is accurate, either. I mean, its designers...

Is There a Dedicated FATE Forum on the Internet Anymore?

I'm a Fate fan as well. I really enjoyed hearing some of their insights into the game and process of developing it. I never really take much on Fate as the "final word" though, even from its designers. That game's central mechanics are pretty robust when it comes to either screwing them up or...

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

I don't want to get into a big discussion about it here, but you do realize that the bible itself references some of the changes that @Garthanos is talking about, right? I mean, a decent number of "history"* stories in the old testament are about the religious conflicts within the Hebrew...

Real Life Places That Inspire You As A DM

Honestly almost any ancient site can do it for me. I'd like to say that natural ones do as well, but usually they just highlight to me how inadequate D&D is at dealing with natural terrain. (Since you specified as DM). Perhaps even more importantly than the sites are oddball artifacts like...

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

Details matter, in this case (and many others), I think.

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

I find very little I can comment on here(in this thread) without risking violating board rules. Makes me wonder why this was posted. Still, I feel compelled to offer this up for consumption. I would hesitate to give the young lady too much advice without knowing things like "Are her parents...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ban Variant-Human! Impact?

At night...or in a dungeon. Also, lack of darkvision really limits missile combat. You're out there ready to target, but if the enemy isn't within 20 feet of your light....

    D&D 5E (2014) Ban Variant-Human! Impact?

um...what now? Right, but people needing a torch means that someone is using a hand (or burning a Light spell, or whatnot). Its not like the dwarf is going to care, so he ain't holding it and giving up a shield (or a second weapon hand). Not having darkvision puts a serious damper on a PC's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ban Variant-Human! Impact?

Probably. It depends on the mood I'm trying to set in the game. Its not really hard, just ask "Who is holding the torch(es)?" as they roll initiative. Now, that also might vary with edition. 1e Dwarves are a bit over-the-top, so pushing it there can seriously disadvantage the humans overall.

    D&D 5E (2014) Ban Variant-Human! Impact?

That's highly campaign and DM dependent. - just saying My last campaign was all humans and I pushed lighting pretty hard.

Cartography - Why the focus on Renaissance?

I've run into this problem before. I think some of it is that folks don't want to be reminded of just how filthy the middle ages were. Honestly, in some periods and places, you should have to make a Con save upon entering town. Another big part of it is just the artistry involved. People like...

D&D 5E (2014) DM in trouble needs advice/help to balance encounters in his campaign.

Changing the rests is the thing I was going to suggest. It's in the DMG, IIRC. Another option, that can be used at the same time. Add more simple encounters with small-medium sized groups of easily dispatched opponents. If you can get a few of the folks like paladins and wizards to blow some...

A problem with the miniatures industry.

I seem to recall at least one fat mage in (I think) the Basic Set back in the day. So, maybe not all of our heroes are gender-hypertrophic.

D&D 5E (2014) The "everyone at full fighting ability at 1 hp" conundrum

TBH, I think that's what a decent portion of the audience is looking for. HP just "keep it interesting." -could be wrong, and maybe they don't even realize that. I certainly had no trouble putting PCs down in my 5e game, but I ignored the encounter guidelines.
