Trying to Describe "Narrative-Style Gameplay" to a Current Player in Real-World Terms

As someone who's a George Lucas but loves progression, my own personal take is that I want it to feel a good change in power and capabilities over time. Also because I don't care about the fictional world, I respect it ofc, but It's a polite respect.

NeoTrad/OC Play, & the treatment of friendly NPCs (++)

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'that' in the first para. But assuming you mean subverting chracter concept--like being a true pacifist in DnD--then either they(that single player or the table as a whole) trudge along by ignoring the rule system in question or find another ga,e/table/system

NeoTrad/OC Play, & the treatment of friendly NPCs (++)

Depends if the character is meant for 'At this part, we'll talk about the morality of killing vampires' while the other is 'At this part, this fucker is gonna die and we'll dance on his ashes'. My own perspective is that subverting the supporting cast's 'purpose' is generally considered bad...

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

How would stuff like CofD splats humanity meters or 'character arc classes' ALA Chuubo work into this?

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

I would not consider LotR to be NeoTrad imo. Maybe Hobbit. But really, if people want to understand neoTrad, I'd suggest they play Final Fantasy 7--I think that's the most archetypical inspiration on what NeoTrad is imagined to look like for players, even the ecletic aesthetic sensibilities...

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

On that last part I agree. There's areason why I consider Nwod(RIP ) to be textbook Neotrad. The difference is, I don't think I agree with the 2nd there. As in, the grizzled Human Fighter in my example is very much a Neotrad character since stuff is happening based around what the...

What Games do you think are Neotrad?

Honestly that just sounds like a more specific version of what I said. But also you can 100% make a character that fits the setting and world and have it be Neotrad by way of making the campaign/play experience revolving around the PC's issues, foibles, and backstories--just because you made a...

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

Personally @Not a Decepticon I think it's great that there's a subsystem where a player can just say 'This is my space, Yo--the GM--have to ask me permission to do naughty word up stuff about it'.

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

No i think it's pretty succeeding since the one that gets the most riled up about how bad it is is the one that's getting repeated mod warnings. So it must be doing something good on making someone like that so angry.

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

Yeah sure, is the game about preventing the king's death or the fallout of the king's death. I'd complain if it was the first, won't care if it's the 2nd.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Personally I don't like the idea of Half-Elf/Orc being specifically human and elf/orc only in how DnD presents species now. I prefer if half-elf/orc work like subraces where you replace a race feature with something else., doesn't work too well in 5e though.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

I'm not seeing a single Con here. It feels great to be pampered, my whinings are heard(but not enough). If it bothers you so much that Halflings can be a very strong fighter, simply never ASI your strength! And heavily discourage players to not take strength ASIs if you're the DM! I don't care...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Ya. It isn't enough, baby steps while I wanted leaps. But I already do play games like that, you can complain that it isn't verisimilitudinous enough I complain about how it isn't gamist enough. It's great that 5.24 is leaning more towards my preference but It's still too cowardly to go for...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Player's Handbook Reviews

Oh I'm not referring to tables played 'realistically'--I still hate it but won't yuck their yum*--I'm talking about rules design based on 'realism'. I'd rather have inventory points(You have 5 IP, spend 2 to pull out a a long length of rope) then think about encumbrance or 4e style Marks and...

D&D General They were all dead. The final arrow was an exclamation mark on everything that had led to this point.

SO what if I just throw myself like lemmings at everything then? Just keep dying and I won't care then.

Yes, because that's what the undercurrent of how HP is designed. So of course it makes sense, it is how it is. You go home, you sleep, the HP bar refills. Bada bing. Bada boom The meat just heals, duh. It's meat, if you run out of meat you are dying, if you have meat you aren't. You don't get...
