AD&D 1E How similar are the 1E and 2E DMG books?

I fell in love with the 5E DMG the day it came out, and I feel that they did an amazing job with it.

AD&D 1E How similar are the 1E and 2E DMG books?

Just bought both the 1E and 2E DMGs at a local comic/game shop. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

AD&D 1E How similar are the 1E and 2E DMG books?

That pretty much nails what I was looking to understand. I think what I'll do is still get the 2E DMG just to complete my long uncompleted core collection of 2E, but still grab the 1E DMG for the creative ideas. Thanks to everyone for the responses!

AD&D 1E How similar are the 1E and 2E DMG books?

My DMing experience mostly lies in the 1983 Red Box set, 5E, and some other RPG systems. With AD&D, I played 2E as a player, but not 1E. I know that the 2E PHB has some differences from 1E, but it was largely the same game. I've heard it said several times that the 1E DMG is a great source of...

D&D 5E (2014) Have you run any "Classic Modules Today" from DMs Guild?

Haven't tried any of these, but I have converted older modules on the fly without much trouble.

D&D 5E (2014) What do you do when players say "we go north" but their characters don't have the "Keen Mind" Feat or Navigation Equipment?

I just generally use a Survival Check for navigating as per the PHB if North isn't so obvious that they can't fail. Then I'll set a DC and impose Advantage or Disadvantage of appropriate.

Looking for help with inspiration - rat-themed events

Great idea, I hadn't thought of Skavens. (Course I'm a big Blood Bowl and 40k fan, so anything Warhammer would get my vote :D )

Looking for help with inspiration - rat-themed events

Maybe have an area of town near a sewer where they encounter a rat king. "Rat kings involve a number of rats intertwined at their tails, which become stuck together with, for instance, blood, dirt, ice, horse-hair, or feces—or simply knotted. The animals reputedly grow together while joined at...

Editions of D&D you have played the most in your life

    1. 5th Edition - have played it the most consistently of all editions I've played since it was released. 2. BECMI - mostly just the Red Box Basic, really. This was my introduction to D&D in the early 80s, and my most played before 5th edition. 3. 2nd Edition - only actually played a couple of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Minor Illusion

No because the actual target is not smaller. Even if his aim is a little off, he'd go through the illusion because the character he's targeting doesn't really have less of his body exposed. It just looks that way to the shooter.

D&D 5E (2014) concentration in 5th edition, whats your fix?

Concentration is fine and works as intended. If you don't like it, you can of course change it, but I think the 5e version is just right.

D&D 5E (2014) Met me Met me Met me in the dungeon

Let me consult the dice...... The dice have spoken and have declared that in my games, they will determine what happens when a roll is necessary (but I still fudge rolls for new players on rare occasions....but don't tell the dice I said that).

    D&D 5E (2014) Adamantine Skeleton?

I like the idea of resistance to bludgeoning in addition to critical hits being treated as normal. On a side note, although I don't generally use minis in D&D that often, the Necron Flayed Ones miniatures from WH40k would be great for these creatures (they need assembled and painted like all GW...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should a D&D 5e DM read the DMG and PHB?

It seems like you have a really good attitude about this, and it's good that it worked out that you can take over as DM without any negativity or hostility. One thing you might want to think about in your session 0 is to set an expectation that the players understand at least the basic rules...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should a D&D 5e DM read the DMG and PHB?

I was just flipping through my DMG tonight and this thread came to mind when I was on page 5. The answer to this topic is covered in the rules. Under the section titled Part 3: Master of Rules, the fifth paragraph reads: "To referee the rules, you need to know them. You don't have to memorize...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should a D&D 5e DM read the DMG and PHB?

I completely agree. I've had great success running games for people who haven't read the rules. They have a character sheet that tells them what abilities they have, and I just follow the 3 basic steps of the game: -I tell them the situation -They tell me what they want to do -I tell them the...
