D&D 5E (2014) Poll: Which do you prefer to play more. A Fighter or a Rogue?

Thief/Rogue has always been my favorite class since BECMI and AD&D 2e. As a kid when I first started, I just related to gadgets and tinkering along with puzzle solving that I got to do with thieves and their ability to disarm traps and pick locks. I do enjoy playing fighters on occasion, but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should a D&D 5e DM read the DMG and PHB?

I'm not sure I even get how he thought he was DMing a D&D game. I mean you have to actually know SOMETHING about the game to run an adventure, let alone a campaign. As has been said, he needs to, at the very least, read the basic rules and basic DM guide, but if he's planning on running many...

    D&D 5E (2014) New to the dnd world(kinda)

You didn't mention if you've read through the basic rules or not, so just in case, you can get them for free here: http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules Read through the basic rules and it will walk you through creating a character. If you like what you see there and want more...

D&D 5E (2014) How big does a dungeon have to be to be a megadungeon?

I always thought a Megadungeon was just a dungeon where they were cranking Megadeth through the speakers the whole time.

    D&D 5E (2014) Advice on lunch-hour games

The biggest thing that comes to mind is set-up time. So I agree with the suggestions to do TotM. If it takes 10 minutes to set up and 5 to tear down, that leaves you with only 45 minutes to actually play. Make sure everyone knows the rules well, both for the game and for their class and race...

    Succubus NPC

There are plenty of dragons that have the "change shape" ability. You might find a young version of one of those that matches the CR you need.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you define the current edition of D&D rules-light or rules-heavy?

Didn't answer because I don't think it's rules-light or rules-heavy. It's lighter than 1e and 2e, but heavier than lots of other games I play. I think it's a great balance, and answering anything other than rules-medium or rules-just-right wouldn't reflect my true thoughts.

D&D 5E (2014) DMs of EN World: How do YOU assign HP to monsters?

I roll, but if possible, I do it ahead of time. I generally know where the party could go, and what encounters they might run into, so I roll monster HP for those charts pre-game session and keep them on a piece of paper out of sight of the players. That way, when they get to an encounter, I can...

    D&D 5E (2014) Complete revamped 5e sheet

Nice job, and I like the extra info on the sheet that isn't included on the official sheets. I'll definitely show these to my players.

D&D 5E (2014) What should be in a 5E Game Prep generator? [Poll]

Are you familiar with the One Page Dungeon contest? I find that a lot of the entries (which they keep on the site for download) fit in exactly the way you described. https://www.dungeoncontest.com/

    D&D 5E (2014) Looking for a missing person adventure

Ooh, just took a look at this at the DMs Guild and it looks like it might be just right. Everything in the description fits what I'm looking for. Thanks for the suggestion. I do enjoy Cthulhu related things, but none of us know that system and since we'll be starting soon, don't really want to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Looking for a missing person adventure

I'm going to run a game for a new group, in addition to the HotDQ game I've been running for awhile. This new group consists of 4 players - 2 adults plus a 13 year old and an 11 year old. They are big fans of Stranger Things and want something that feels like the show. 1 of the adults has played...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wave Echo Cave Shenanigans

I think you missed my point. Being overly wordy and elaborate does not equal plans logically succeeding every time. And I've seen characters use that to try to overcome things that need successful actions in addition to a good plan, expecting DMs to handwave every little thing they encounter...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wave Echo Cave Shenanigans

Sounds like a great session, and I think you were right on with awarding with good results for their creative thinking. Sometimes players will get the idea from something like this that if they just come up with a wordy elaborate plan, they'll auto-succeed, which is not a good policy, but when...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

Not at all. As I said in a previous post, combat is one of my personal favorite parts of D&D, so avoiding that would be avoiding part of what I love about D&D, and would be counter to my goals as a DM. It's more about the feeling of risk and reward. When the risk is not great, the reward doesn't...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

I don't know where several people are getting the idea that I want less combat as I've never said that. Nothing could be further from the truth. Combat is one of my favorite aspects of D&D. Um...no. That's so far from what I'm saying. Everything I've said is more about adding more excitement to...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

I used the word wounds, but we do treat HP as described in the PHB. But that's really not relevant to what I'm talking about. Regardless of how you define it, it's a resource that you have that when depleted, potentially leads to death. If it's so easily replenished, protecting that resource...
