D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

I answered that earlier, but to state it another way, I would like to encourage players to think more strategically and to feel that being wounded matters. When you can just get through a bunch fights knowing you'll be topped off after a long rest and be fresh as new, being wounded doesn't feel...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

So far, it sounds like the result has been that it just slows things down unnecessarily. If I were to try this, I would only try the Slow Natural Healing rule that removes full HP recovery from a long rest so that HD have to be spent to recover HP (outside of magic healing and potions, of...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

Thanks. I'm well familiar with that section of the rules, but that doesn't really address my question of how the Slow Natural Healing has played out in actual games. If anyone has used this option, I'd love to hear opinions on how it worked out.

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

The DMG uses the word grittier, so that's probably why most posters use that word. For me, gritter means that healing isn't so easy as just a simple, "I went to bed at the verge of death and woke up in perfect mental and physical health after 8 hours." Grittier would mean working harder to avoid...

D&D 5E (2014) Slow Natural Healing in actual play

Having started with the 1983 Red Box Basic, and then mostly playing 2E before 5e, it won't surprise you that I often think healing in 5E is a little too easy for my taste. However, we generally stick to the core rules and have been using standard Long Rest healing. I have been thinking about...

D&D 5E (2014) Anyone know of an adventure where real world kids become sucked into a fantasy D&D-type world?

Interesting. I have that set and didn't realize it has an adventure included. I'll have to check it out when I get home.

D&D 5E (2014) Running D&D for Brand Spanking New Players

For new players in that situation, I've made sure not to bog them down with rules and stats. I just start DMing and follow the basic flow (describe the environment/situation, ask what they do, tell them the result). When it's time for dice to be involved, I explain where they need to look on...

    D&D Movie/TV New D&D Movie: July 23rd 2021

Well, I can look forward to this with great excitement, and then if it falls flat, I can just fall back on the joy of where my Bitcoin will be at that time.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. I think you can find some good inspiration here.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Unlucky Guy

I had a halfling stout rogue thief named Strat that was going solo through Death House (I was teaching someone to DM and I had them run a solo game for me to help them get started). After defeating a nursemaid spirit/specter, Strat exited the room and opened the door to a storage closet, at...

D&D 5E (2014) Come out and put yourself on the Gygax scale!

G3 for me, without question. I'm one who really enjoys game mechanics in any type of game, including standard board games, but I do think story in D&D is just as important.

    D&D 5E (2014) CR ratings are obsolete.

When I was at Origins Game Fair this past summer, Chris Perkins and Chris Lindsey did an "Ask the DM" session in one of the conference rooms. I remember someone asked Chris Perkins about using CR, and he said he doesn't really pay attention to it. He just presents the encounter and lets the...

D&D 5E (2014) Why penalize returning from death?

As everyone has said, there has to be a penalty that makes death a big deal, otherwise it takes a lot of (good) tension out of the game. The other aspect is that if someone is really attached to a character that dies, even if you house rule that they can have a new character at the same level...

    D&D 5E (2014) I like magic (It's MAGIC!), and I like to cast spells as a ...

When I play instead of DMing, I play as a rogue or fighter, but on the occasion that I play a magic user, it's generally Wizards. I mean, wizards are pretty cool.

D&D 5E (2014) Gaming with children without changing the game (much)

I started a game that my now 11 year old son was in when he was 7. He was able (with a little help here and there) to play with the full rules just fine. Now at 11, he does very will with the full rules, and has run a couple of mini games himself.

[POLL] Which Xanathar's Guide Cover Do You Prefer?

I like them both, but prefer the special edition. I really like my Volo's special edition cover, and this will look nice next to that one.
