I've found that mostly the whole "Don't wear armor when you sleep" tends to come from two places: 1 - DMs who don't know it really isn't that outrageous. 2 - DMs who want to catch the Fighters with their Hauberks down... The first is less egregious problem than the second.

We are in total agreement. D&D is good at "simulating D&D" and in most respects the genre work that is reflected in it (though for less wahooey Sword and Sandal genres I'd chose a less wahooey system).
