Why use D&D for a Simulationist style Game?

I'd argue 4e GURPS handles simulating reality fine... it does not handle simulating Super Heroic "Reality" well. At least not with out a heaping dose modifying (which several genre books have aimed to do, such as GURPS Action). But Dungeon Fantasy? Cliffhanger Noir? Space Opera? Sci-Fi...

    D&D 5E (2014) Knowledge: Nobility and Local?

WHRP is not the "upper end" for "skill-based" roleplaying games. I'm not sure GURPS is, but with over 370 skills (not including skill modifying Techniques or skills which require individual Specializations) I'm confident it's close. Keep in mind though, a) it has skill that are basically...

How Gary Gygax lost control of D&D

You know... it's entirely possible that without GenCon and the many other organizations Gygax was involved in (or outright created himself) D&D may never have caught on in the way it did.

How Gary Gygax lost control of D&D

So you play D&D and complain it feels like D&D... Sigh. As it is with every other edition of D&D. And your wrong. Hold your questions until the History Lesson Ride is over... MAR Barker was working on stuff for Tekumiel (to help him figure out the world of Tekumiel), but as D&D came...

D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger: You got spellcasting in my peanut butter!

Put me in the "I want a No Magic Ranger" club, my Rangers don't 'gish'... Roll it off? No... knock it back like a pro!

    D&D 5E (2014) Campaign settings in 5e

I'd possibly buy Gazetteers* if they made them again. If they made them right. *I'm talking in the style of the Grand Duchy of Karameikos.

D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger: You got spellcasting in my peanut butter!

My compliant is "Rangers get all these cool benies without needing the Proficiency". Which one is that again? The with the attribute bonus or the one with the class perk? Unless they are Tracking a simple set of tracks. At which point Bob so outclasses Sally it's fundimentally insane. But...

Not really sure where to put this, but here seemed best. Miniatures related.

SJGames Cardboard Heroes are awesome. Cheap too for just the pdfs (though if you're going that route there are plenty of free alternatives). The pre-printed ones are more expensive but still far, far cheaper than actual miniatures.

D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger: You got spellcasting in my peanut butter!

Maybe to you, but not to me. It's part and parcel with the other nonsense in D&D, arbitrary limits imposed by Class restrictions for purely "balance" reasons. Sure, I agree, balance can be good, but a lot of these things simply do not stand up to under the harsh light of critical thinking...

    D&D 5E (2014) DOAM Status in 5E?

At this moment: Non-existent. Possibility remains of it popping up as an optional ability in the DMG.

D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger: You got spellcasting in my peanut butter!

Argh! I left out one little word. Yeah, D&D is not one of them. You should really try the FATE system some day, I recommend Dresden Files in particular (it really does handle the Angel Summoner and BMX Bandit situation really well). Except there is no "favored terrain" (unless Urban is...

D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger: You got spellcasting in my peanut butter!

You know there are game systems that allow for the Angel Summoner and the BMX Bandit to play together and be comparative. D&D is not one of them.

D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger: You got spellcasting in my peanut butter!

Arguably you would then be better at doing something than the person who can't do that thing. Those are called skills.... So your argument is that at some point you who can solder a pipe should somehow gain the ability to "know how best to lay pipe" over say the guy who has been plumbing all...

D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger: You got spellcasting in my peanut butter!

Sadly he wasn't hiding behind the curtain when he touched me in my "This is where I stop believing in a game about Pointy Eared peeps tossing about magical fire" place. :( No I get all that. It's just this is where in 5e I went "Sigh" and shook my head. Hey, I made it past levels and classes...

D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger: You got spellcasting in my peanut butter!

The thing I find the most lolworthy about 5e's "mechanically enforced class skills" is the Ranger and Rogue don;t even have to be good at those skills and yet they can automagically be better at them in those narrow mechanically enforced ways... A Ranger with no Survival, Athletics, or Stealth...

How Gary Gygax lost control of D&D

I am completely serious in my humour over your usage of phrase. I'm scoffing at "that the world couldn't handle". Hint: The world handled him just fine, Mr. Gygax couldn't handle the world, that is why he lost the company he never actually owned. That he and Arneson kicked off the modern...

Two encounters at once: what would you do?

You and I have completely opposite DM styles. I barely ever do prep work, I run 90% by the seat of my pants, if I draw inspiration from a published adventure or AP it's always heavily altered, etc. For me the two hardest session are the first and last of a campaign. In the first I have no...

Two encounters at once: what would you do?

What Celebrim means is this: "No plan ever survives an encounter with the players." He was responding directly to your disbelief that the players would do something you hadn't counted on. Always expect this. The players will always think of something you didn't. To counter this, remain...
