For those who don't like "shouting healthy" powers

KarinsDad not to antagonize your stance but I think I remember reading in the 4E rulebook that hit points also measures luck and resolve? It isn't purely a physical concept. Will an official statement satisfy you (no sarcasm)? Hit points isn't named Health Points or Wound Points for a reason...

    Smartphone Apps for DMs/Players

Hi all. I'm hoping to compile a list of useful and recommended apps for smartphones or the iPad that us table-top gamers. Please feel free to contribute and I'll do my best to update it with a credit. If a similar thread already exists I'm happy to transfer my post there instead. The list...

    Average PC damage per hit?

I will echo Viking and recommend the numberless HP system for monsters. I use an iPhone and the initiative app I use tracks HP for me too. It's actually much faster than using the HP box method, from personal experience.

Things to Talk To in the Dungeon

What I usually do is openly pass hidden information (like in a folded note) gained by a character with a high passive insight or perception score. Then I prompt "hmm it seems Gopkins has noticed something" to the other players. It usually gets them to start naturally speaking in character to...

    Feeling a bit concerned...

I can sympathize with your disappointment. If it makes it any better, 4E is easy to reskin and homebrew so at least you have that. Have fun!

    A mini-rant re: Pathfinder and D&D

Perhaps a lot of bad blood can be prevented if both camps agree that D&D is a trademark; AD&D, 3.x, 4E are rules sets of D&D; to not use D&D to mean TRPG or the-edition-I-love. For me: Does it involve dice? Yes Do you play a character in a story? Yes Do you have stats? Yes Does it involve one...

    A mini-rant re: Pathfinder and D&D

Sorry for the derailing. I don't think there is an excuse for "football hooliganism behavior" and more accurately speaking: I meant I don't understand why we as a community tolerate and participate in it instead of having a majority that frown on such infighting like in the volleyball circle. I...

    A mini-rant re: Pathfinder and D&D

Maybe it's my English but I was just trying to express that such infighting and edition warring is negative and pointless and I wish that everyone could instead see the value of us all liking the same hobby: TRPGs Just my own feelings. My other passion is volleyball and we don't have this...

    Talent Trees - Your Thoughts?

I guess I have to agree with the bloat issue and the fact that there is an illusion of choice. But I still like the idea of TTs and I will enjoy having a fixed framework of "feat schools" to work from, as well as a having visual map of feats I will pick up. IOW I am ok with the bloat and ok...

    Talent Trees - Your Thoughts?

@Jawsh of course it's gonna veer towards silly or boring TTs if the designers don't know when to stop. I mean, how many ice-cream flavors do you really need, right? TTs are not inherently bogus or flavorless, so I only agree with you in the context of game designers doing... well... bad game...

    Talent Trees - Your Thoughts?

I am not actually familiar with Star Wars Saga, but I'll venture a reply. Please pardon me for any presumption or off-the-mark comments I may indulge in. I like the idea! I think it might be quite neat though I suspect some may dislike how gamist it can come across. I'm tickled by the idea of...

    A mini-rant re: Pathfinder and D&D

Argh. :( May I be candid? This is like hearing what Christianity and Islam have to say about what the One True Religion is. Or hearing fans argue which Final Fantasy is the real Final Fantasy and which is more or less or not. I will never understand why some people take edition-love or...

    D&D 4E Reply if you love 4e

I love DMing in 4E as it's really simple for me. I can wrap my head around the crunch quickly enough to get to the story bits. I also like that it's extremely accessible to outsiders of the hobby.

The DM Burnout and How to Get Past That: Advice?

LOL, Danny you're absolutely right! The non-RPers in the group (half of them) hate the way I try to emphasize RP over grid-based combat, so yes, they are not into me as a DM for sure (did I misunderstand you? Sorry, I'm not a native speaker)! Now, I love combat, but I want it to have meaning...

The DM Burnout and How to Get Past That: Advice?

Hey again, all! Thanks again to all who posted and offered their insight to help me troubleshoot my group. Swedish Chef might be right after all: maybe I just need to stop reading all that "DMing Guides" and just figure out what my players are into first and foremost. Here's what happened...

Do you want/are you ready for a D&D 5th edition?

Sure, why not. :) I'm not too emotionally invested in a system so I'm coming from an "outsider's" point of view, perhaps. I currently play 4E. When 4E first came out my jaw dropped at the very idea of spammy Magic Missiles like most others in my gaming gang. Within' seconds I shrugged it off...

    Number Of GMs Per Group?

4 out of 6 of us. However I'm the only one who is actively running a game. The other 3 are of the "thinking about running", and/or "retired DM for now" variety. I have only played in one of DMs' game 5 years ago IIRC.

The DM Burnout and How to Get Past That: Advice?

Wow, first of all, thank you all, fellow DMs and players alike, for your perspectives and input! Thanks for taking the time to post your suggestions and thoughts. I'm new at ENWorld so I'm not sure about the XP etiquette--i.e. am I allowed to XP all of you out of pure gratitude, heh! I sent...
