D&D General Playing D&D without combat

Yes, you were absolutely playing 5E D&D. Yes, you can play an entire campaign without a single combat and have tons of fun. However, there are MUCH better game systems for this style of play.

D&D General What if Critical Role had stuck with Pathfinder? Or 4E?

#1 was genuinely good stuff, and I use it at my own table. #2 was actually a nerf, because Matt completely forgot about the Cantrip rule and was letting everyone cast two spells a turn if they had the ability to do so. Which became a big issue with Tiberius and his quickened multi-fireballs...

    D&D 5E (2014) Play out this scene

Is this a pure hypothetical or an actual party? I had an exhaustive list of things pop into my head, from closing the bolt on the door to buy time if someone comes, to using the rolled up rug to hang over the window to block lantern light while everyone searches, measuring the size of the...

D&D General What Have You Awarded XP For?

I was awarded XP for carnal relations with a farm animal. Which option would that be on the voting choices? Slaying? Exceptional Roleplaying? Other?

D&D General A Dent in 1.3 Billion? A Crossroads for Multimedia?

Oh yeah. I would not be surprised in the slightest if Matt has sat down with Chris, Jeremy, and a few others and basically had a conversation about "We're going in a kid friendly direction, so I don't think either of us want to have CR folded under the WotC umbrella. But you're doing great work...

D&D General A Dent in 1.3 Billion? A Crossroads for Multimedia?

It's something he has needed to do for his Non-WotC published products. Like both the Tal'Dorei books making sure they don't specifically include major name monsters from WotC, or how Legend of Vox Machina needed to change all the major IP spells into serial-number-free versions of the same...

D&D General Top 3-5 articles you would recommend for a new DM

There are so many great recommendations here, but mine is the Three Clue Rule. I cannot count the number of times a failed check has stopped forward progress in a game, and the Three Clue Rule really helps keep things moving forward.

D&D General A Dent in 1.3 Billion? A Crossroads for Multimedia?

Honestly nothing. I know that's not what you are asking, but Matt has been very loyal to the D&D brand and I see that continuing into the future. He's absolutely in a great position to start his own roleplaying system (ala Pathfinder) thanks to his enormous following, Darrington Press, and the...

D&D 5E (2014) Fear spell, bonus action and form of dread

It reminds me of Stillness of Mind VS Dominate Person. But I would allow it. There's nothing that mechanically prohibits it, it's an extremely cool moment for the player, and it's not like I'm losing if my players are winning. :P

    D&D 5E (2014) So what % of D&D IS combat?

Whatever you want. D&D has very strong DNA from wargaming, and a large chunk of the game is framed around this. The fact that so much of D&D is a wargame is just part of its identity. But you don't ever need to actually use it for combat if you don't want. I don't see the "Enormous Shrug"...

D&D 5E (2014) Beast master wants to use pet to get +5 to passive perception

Under that interpretation, what happens when I wait for it to take the Dodge action then command it to take another action?

D&D 5E (2014) Beast master wants to use pet to get +5 to passive perception

My wolf buddy ate all our rations and then just sat there looking guilty. The lazy bugger. I knew he'd do it again given half a chance!

D&D 5E (2014) Beast master wants to use pet to get +5 to passive perception

Even if the phrase was referring to a specific mechanic about "the group’s chance of noticing hidden threats.", I don't know what that mechanic would be. I assume either the Surprise rules or some kind of custom skill challenge, but the Surprise rules are pretty clear that each person is getting...

D&D General Quaint and curious monsters of forgotten core

Same. Specifically it's how they behave. It's entirely possible to have frightening intelligent Modrons in your game, but the lower ranks are heavily flanderized and used for comic relief when they appear in media (and even other people's games). At best you get some kind of comedic dystopia...

D&D General Quaint and curious monsters of forgotten core

Fomorians, most definitely. I always loved how they would just show up in D&D related video games, in the middle of someone else's plot. At the very least NWN and Icewind Dale II, but I feel like there was at least one more.

D&D 5E (2014) Beast master wants to use pet to get +5 to passive perception

Multiple posters have shown you the relevant rules. Nothing I show you will matter. The DC is beyond me, and more eloquent speakers than myself have rolled Nat 20s and failed.

D&D 5E (2014) Beast master wants to use pet to get +5 to passive perception

It's whatever makes the most sense for the story, and/or what I have in mind for the ecology of the area the party is adventuring in. I make an effort to include a fair mix of ambushing monsters in the world, but the players decide what regions (and hence what monsters) they tend to encounter...

D&D 5E (2014) Beast master wants to use pet to get +5 to passive perception

No idea. It's the same thing to me as when a player says "I bellow in rage and rush the tentacle horror, lashing out with my greataxe at his swollen belly!" and my brain translates that as "Bonus action: Rage. 20' of movement. Attack action." If the player says "I rush over to the wounded woman...
