D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

Especially when we're supposed to basically "run the world simulator" in our DM brains as we go. If our brains can't make sense of the underlying "logic" then it makes it that much harder to keep the plates spinning as it were. This is what I feel my brain is doing while I "smoothly" narrate...

D&D 5E (2014) Running Rime of the Frost Maiden

Yep - that was the light bulb moment for me. The world is living already in your brain - you don't need to attempt a mind meld with a WotC designer :)

D&D 5E (2014) Running Rime of the Frost Maiden

Fantastic, and yet the D&D player base is exploding so there are an awful lot of people who will have to go through this painful learning experience: :P

D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

Can we change the direction of the supertanker that is WotC? Probably not, but there are an awful lot of adventure writers on this board publishing on DMs Guild and elsewhere and perhaps these criticisms of WotCs efforts might make them think differently about how they present their adventures...

D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

I think of it as a 5e Starter Set not a D&D Starter Set. In other words, it's a great introductory adventure for on-ramping existing D&D players and DMs to the 5e ruleset, but it's not a great introduction to the actual game of D&D, because there is little to no handholding for new DMs and...

D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

Ha, I resemble that remark and I actually think it would be quite easy to enhance LMoP for new DMs. A few sidebars explaining how a DM might handle the various novel situations that come up. How you might go about foreshadowing (because that is sorely lacking in LMoP) etc. Really it’s no hard to...

D&D 5E (2014) Running Rime of the Frost Maiden

I’ve come to a similar conclusion, published adventures are more effort and less fun. It was a bit of a shock! :)

D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

And thanks for this. It’s an unpopular opinion, but one I definitely share. That opening encounter for goodness sakes! Not only illogical: dead horses in the road is pretty big sign of trouble ahead! But also the poor DM has to handle an ambush scenario! TPKs are not uncommon I hear. I...

D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

I think just putting “Hey DMs, we hope you enjoy reading this adventure because it’s going to be a real pain when you try to run it! ;)” would do the job. I find a ;) really softens the blow, so that would be a nice touch.

I want to think that WotC does this internally, but I fear they don’t. Seems pretty bloody obvious.

I’d love to see a plethora of starter sets, a number of 6-10 adventures, a few 11-15 and a couple of 16-20. Each setting should have a dedicated starter set IMHO.

I’ve run (in various forms) LMoP, ToD, RoT, SKT, OotA and Dragon Heist. The last being the straw that broke me :) I’ve not tried adapting anything yet.

D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

Yeah - there's way too much "make it an entertaining read" and far too little of "make it easy for me to prep and run". I think a bunch of reviews of WotC adventures are "Wow that was a fun read, 5 stars!!!" Very few are post-run (because people like to review things when they first come out...

It's fine - we're much more about story and adventure than threat of death. (Also she just had a death in her family so this is an escape so I'm very not interested in trying to kill her character :) ). This is for character to have some interesting encounters, fun challenges and new things to...
