D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

That is, sadly, a common claim: D&D is not hard to learn, apparently, so if you're struggling then it's your fault. I think many have forgotten how intimidating this game can be. There are seemingly endless rules, options and numbers that all come together at the table where you have the...

D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

I guess I should buy a copy... just so I can say I have it (and I'm sure there are parts to strip...)

D&D 5E (2014) How Wotc can improve the adventure books.

Remember that there are new DMs attempting to run these adventures and the more "clever" you make them the harder it is. And telling new DMs to "make it your own" is like telling a new skier to just go to the top of the mountain and find your own way down! :)

D&D 5E (2014) Running Rime of the Frost Maiden

I don't think that necessarily follows?

D&D 5E (2014) Running Rime of the Frost Maiden

I've heard good things about Paizo's efforts. People seem to have high praise for Rise of the Runelords for example. But I've not run them. But I'd also say that just because everyone is probably doing a poor job, doesn't mean WotC could be doing a better job :) - they are the 800lb gorilla in...

D&D 5E (2014) Another “Running for one player” thread...

So as the coronavirus trudges on I’ve decided to run an in-person game for 1 player (tired of doing online games as I sit in front of a computer all day anyway). This is going to be a prequel ”early years” game for this players character (she loves this character who is a Ranger and a loner...

D&D 5E (2014) Running Rime of the Frost Maiden

Well it’s not like WotC doesn’t have a history of producing hare-brained adventures for 5e... so I’d say it‘s fair enough to assume this likely follows the pattern. And sorry if there are some of us who expect more from this publisher.

D&D 5E (2014) Running Rime of the Frost Maiden

For me, I just assumed that after 50 years of adventure creation it would be down to a fine art for professionals in the business. But apparently it's still kind of hit and miss. Edit: for example, the fact that they don't even bother to tag encounters with the expected difficulty or give some...

D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

More fool me once (or 5+ times) .... won't get fooled again. But as I think you've admitted you don't run these modules so it's no big deal to you. On the other hand I have (or at least tried to), and I'm tired of the messes I've had to clean up all because WotC tried to be cute with plot...

I think that can be assumed, so this is more the tip of the iceberg so to speak. :)

D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

Funnily enough this: Makes it sound like there are two parts, but I think my point still stands because the overarching problem is present right from the start rather than being a change that causes the PCs to go on an epic quest. But I don't agree that it's a problem for the adventure to...

D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

This is where I think WotC is missing an opportunity. Instead of mashing up the big plot with the gazetteer they should be thinking of the adventure in two parts (similar to what they did with SKT, but not as poorly executed). IMHO, the book should be broken into two parts - Icewind Dale and...

    The Horror! of Haunted Houses

I still think the big bad at the end (edit: of Death House) should have been a flesh golem with the baby's head, calling out for it's "mama" :)

D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

Yep and I’m getting there, but as someone starting out as a DM with 5e the learning was not enhanced by the need to not only understand the rules and the adventure (because I naively thought it’d be like training wheels :) ) but also deal with issues within the adventure. My next campaign will...
