2024 ranger is the only one that matters at this point. 2014 ranger was not one of the more popular classes in the DDB results, so it will be interesting to see if that changes.

Plenty of non-magical rangers out there. 4E ranger included. Heck, 2E suggested non-magical examples such Robin Hood as ranger templates. The need for magic is just a 5E thing.

Rangers are associated with DPS because they are associated with hunting and wielding two weapons. D&D defined a lot of video game tropes.

Subclasses can be very different or just kind of a blip depending on the class and your choices. They typically get you a few specific abilities and access to some feats that expand on your choice, but in some cases you can instead focus on the feats every subclass has access to.
