I don't know the 5E scroll rules; are Scrolls of Hunter's mark an option?

My only concern is the delayed access; that's only reasonable if there are actual stock or shipping limitations, or if it goes early to FLGSs. It's worth noting that WotC did try loot boxes with those card packs in 4E and Gamma World.

Amusingly, in 2E the more rangery ranger was the ninja, especially when you used the Pathfinder kit to emphasize tracking.

It may just be a hangup on the part of the designers-that-be. Rangers have a lot of possibilities and plenty of real world and fictional examples to use as a basis. Could be some design doc sitting in a drawer that outlines that ranger has to be X and cannot be Y for 5E.

There is no escaping mathemagic in D&D without alternative rules, it's true. Not even in Pathfinder.

So fighters and rogues shouldn't be able to fight ogres and wyverns without spells? Edit: If you LIKE rangers to have spells, that's cool. You don't need to defend your preference with logic in a fantasy world.

And 2E had a few kits that reduced magic gain even further.

Ultimately, this is strictly a choice WotC made based on whatever their internal discussion is. There is no logic strong-arming them into this. Rangers haven't needed to rely on spells this hard or this early in any prior edition. They used to wait until 8th level, then WotC bumped it to 4th...

Apply this logic to a fighter or a rogue, who in the real world are beating up peasants or stealing from velvet-encrusted nobles with gout.

I really love the idea of bronze age tech being the default with pockets of "super advanced" civilizations with plate armor here and there near higher-threat dangers.

I imagine that with vulnerability being so extreme in 5E they can't use it for much beyond gimmick monsters. Much easier to use when the difference is smaller.
