It's essentially replacing hunting skills with a form of external technology and implies skills aren't good enough for adventuring on their own. A hunter can't possibly hunt without magical GPS target paint, etc.

A ranger could be better at figuring out weak spots in things without hearts, just like a rogue doesn't have to cast a spell to backstab. It is strictly a decision on WotC's part to make rangers into huntress wizards, not any sort of logical outcome.

I grew up using guns and I am very, very bored with them. They also take the skill out of things; a child can kill with a gun as easily as an adult. Not the biggest fan of crossbows, either, but they at least require some work with a crank.
