Why wouldn't newbies buy a campaign setting? As a young player (and newbie) in the 80s I bought: the old FR grey box, Dragonlance Adventures, Greyhawk adventures hardbacks, etc.

The threads I have been able to find seem to put it around 1489 DR (Dale reckoning). This seems to be based upon two pieces of info: 1. the dates in the later Sundering novels 2. the date given to start adventure league material using the Tyranny of Dragon storyline

I like the map. It reminds me a little of the old ICE MERP maps.

It seems like there would have to be some setting update info for the Adventurer's league stuff. And Tyranny of Dragons as well. For instance, I don't know what the current year is in Realms continuity. DMs should have the basics of the update information available to them.
