The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

I think you can get unlucky in some of those games and die. I mean it is true that healing is hard to come by, rests don't heal as much, and there isn't the safety net of death saves.

The "I Didn't Comment in Another Thread" Thread

I don't know if this has been posted here already but I got a kick out of it "I can't believe I spent 35 dollars on a cookbook that doesn't have a recipe for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. When I buy a cookbook, I expect it to tell me how to cook. And don't tell me to just make a PBJ...

    D&D General #Dungeon23

I powered through the whole dungeon! Well sort of. I stopped trying to make my notebook perfect, which meant that I stopped drawing maps or trying to make sure I have everything I would even need to run this. So if I want to run it I'll have to copy it over to a digital format and flesh it...

Ultraviolet Grasslands 2e is out now.

I got mine! Even though I have 1e. It’s beautiful, and at least some of the screen is on the inside covers. I also picked up a one-shot module called Let Us In which looks really fun. UVG is really baroque. In a way it’s different from a lot of other OSR stuff because it is maximalist rather...

    Rules volume and play focus.

Rules volume is one measure of what a game is 'about'. But I would also say any game has a core categorization of rules, one unsurprisingly conveyed via tables of contents. If we look at the 5e PHB table of contents, I wonder if we can rethink the "pillars of play" Pillars of Play Character...

    Rules volume and play focus.

Yes...though, this can be overstated. I think certain gaming types really figure out what the system rewards and play accordingly. In a sense this is "optimization" mentality (even for games that aren't crunchy/trad). Other types of gamers just set their own agenda. For example, when I ran...

    Rules volume and play focus.

A memorable example was from a game several years ago. A player was playing a great old one warlock and got to sixth level: I don't think optimizers would think that that is particularly powerful, especially for a 1/SR ability. But there is really only one use case for this ability: combat...

    Rules volume and play focus.

The real heart of 5e is in the ability score system. They provide a general framework (roll high + ability bns + prof bns if you are good at it) that is used to determine success/fail across a variety of situations, combat included. If we go by page count, we may as well say that dnd is a game...

    OSR Why B/X?

I agree! This wouldn't have occurred to me at the time, but I think the magic user made me feel seen as a POC. Maybe that's why they were my favorite class! https://www.enworld.org/threads/one-piece-of-art-what-d-d-art-inspired-you-to-love-a-class.690436/post-8717912

    OSR Why B/X?

One of the hallmarks of the OSR is that it is generally pretty minimalist. Games come in one book instead of three and are often designed with ease of use in mind. Many of the 'NSR' games are less than 60 pages, and often less than 20 pages in length. Also, much of it is centered around...
