    D&D 5E (2014) So, 5e OGL

I'll be shocked if today's wotc decides to go the curation route. They struggle to manage the exclusive licensees they have now, with their flagship APs--I can't imagine them taking on the challenge of slogging through all the chaff of a general license.

D&D 5E (2014) So how does 5e treat Staffs and Wands?

Who can use a wand or stave? Magic users? Fighters? Anybody?

D&D 5E (2014) My group is questioning everyone.

I always tell players to narrate their own kills. The way that turns out, very few monsters survive that narration in any kind of interrogation-ready state.

D&D 5E (2014) With the Holy Trinity out, let's take stock of 5E

Is 5E good enough to play? Sure. It's fast to play, has few frustrating (to me) playstyle expectations, and stands up well to modification and house rules. That's really all I NEED from D&D. Is 5E good enough to replace 2E and 3E at my table? Yeah, if only because it's balanced enough that I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape Lives!

I don't find it all that mystifying myself. There's a miasma of free floating frustration surrounding the entire topic of D&D's digital suite. Trapdoor doesn't need to do much wrong to get slimed with it; a big setback or two, followed by an overly vague announcement, is enough. (Of course, to...

    Reviews "formula"

From memory, I think both metacrtic and rotten tomatoes use propitiatory, secret formulas to compute their scores. I think that for my money, Enworld would be best served by a brief notification on the review entry page reminding people that fair pros and cons are most valuable to potential...

    D&D 5th Edition Monster Manual

4 out of 5 rating for D&D 5th Edition Monster Manual This book is jammed with good stuff, but I think they left enough money on the table that I can't in good conscience give five stars. The art, writing style, monster abilities (some of which are fluff only!!!!) and approach to world building...

    Carrion Crown Adventure Path

3 out of 5 rating for Carrion Crown Adventure Path If this had been sold as a series of completely separate horror adventures I would probably give the entire set four or five stars. But instead it's a path, and the pathy-ness is where this series really falls down hard on its face. If your...

    X-Com: the Redshirtening

I don't think that's going to matter much, as the tech tree is at its core nothing more than an arbitrary ordering of projects. Since most euro games already arbitrarily order their projects (via luck of the draw) I don't think it'll be terribly problematic for you to choose the order ahead of...

    X-Com: the Redshirtening

What you describe sounds to me like a resource management euro boardgame supplemented with on-the-fly, GM-guided card creation. (As opposed to an RPG domain management system such as the colonization rules in Stars Without Number, which is something that the GM will probably track with a...

    D&D 5th Edition Player's Handbook

5 out of 5 rating for D&D 5th Edition Player's Handbook Wotc's other two editions were very much hampered by the squeaky wheel effect, which resulted in undue attention being paid to a small number of problems at the expense of the product's overall appeal. I'm very pleased to see wotc finally...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape Lives!

And you say downthread the license wasn't pulled for a missed delivery date? That does sound like a cautionary tale worth hearing.

D&D 5E (2014) Looking for good sources for online D&D sessions.

Advertising in the japan time zone, I've consistently filled up my player roster within a couple days of posting. I haven't had any luck finding a game to play in, though. Because it's new, I suspect right now there are a lot more people looking for 5E games than are ready to run one.

    X-Com: the Redshirtening

That sounds like a fair bit of work! If you do wind up making the time investment, I'd be interested to see what you finally come up with.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Excerpt: Wonderous Items

I would love to see what they have in mind for domain management.

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Excerpt: Wonderous Items

Knowing my players? I have a feeling I'm going to find out, at some point during 5E's run.

    X-Com: the Redshirtening

I think I would interpret xcom a little differently: I would say that principally you want the strategic level to get every player super pumped about using their new toys and gathering/preserving resources on the tactical layer; and you want each player coming back from each mission pumped about...

D&D 5E (2014) Ghouls still not quite right in MM

I've had some other ideas. --After the initial failed save, all subsequent saves must be rolled with disadvantage --After the initial failed save, a successful subsequent save merely suspends the condition for one round, rather than ending it. --After the initial failed save, subsequent failed...

D&D 5E (2014) Gamehole Con Live Tweeting Perkins Panel

I might be wrong--but I suspect they could just replace "black" with "blue" and that'd be good enough for Hollywood. Especially if they threw in that the real curse was that their skin had been changed so they could not stand the sun, and the blue tint was merely an incidental magical side effect.
