    D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen - a solid D effort.

This veers away from the topic of the thread, but I suspect it's a question of value add. Morrus' grandma gains knitting patterns by using the internet. Over the past few years, what might players (who already have a group) have gained by reading about D&D online?

D&D 5E (2014) I for one hope we don't get "clarification" on many things.

In this community, right now? I'd rather eat my own eyeballs. From a moderator's perspective, there are pros and cons to enforcing tight restrictions on threadcrapping, and (for probably good reasons) ENworld has weak protections for threads with narrow premises. So until this community...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hoard of the Dragon Queen - a solid D effort.

Although I'm not a huge fan of his adventure designs, I really like James Jacobs analogy of a "sandbox on rails."

D&D 5E (2014) I for one hope we don't get "clarification" on many things.

I think, if one is able to grok the idea that unclear rules have legitimate value, there are very interesting conversations to be had about which rules should be written unclearly and why. For example, why did wotc do stealth rules one way and backgrounds the other? Does their research show...

D&D 5E (2014) I for one hope we don't get "clarification" on many things.

Mearls said, in his interview, that D&D customers don't read read rules text very closely, and for that reason 5E rules are written to confirm whatever biases the reader brings with him or her. To me, this thread confirms he has accomplished his goal. I hope forum users will internalize this...

    D&D 5E (2014) wands

I came to the opposite conclusion--they removed it to decrease clarity of the rules. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Last day of the Necromancer Kickstarter!

Honestly, I'm intrigued by the monster book, but I really want to see more examples of the monster design before I put money down. Frankly, I'm interested in specific things, like clever, evocative lair and legendary actions, rather than more of the same abilities we've been seeing for years...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you Handle P.C's trying to design Traps in 5E?

What kind of trap was it? It seems clear that one would ask for a tools proficiency check based on whatever tools they're using to construct the trap. (e.g., carpenter tools, stoneworking tools, etc.)

D&D 5E (2014) The format of the spell list in the PHB is just plain awful.

In that case, you'd be better served if they'd included page numbers on the spell list. No matter how you slice it, the spell lists are not well organized. I honestly don't understand wotc's intent, here.

D&D 5E (2014) Difference between critical hits and automatic hits.

Honestly I can't vouch for those numbers--we use roll20 to calculate the modifiers, it was a marathon session several weeks ago, and I don't game terribly sober. All I'm certain about is the situation came up, and I made a ruling. Looking back over my notes, I believe it was a chain-mail clad...

D&D 5E (2014) Difference between critical hits and automatic hits.

I don't agree this is a fair assumption--melee guys sometimes decide to switch out to ranged combat. I only bring this up because I've had such a case arise in my game (IIRC it was an AC 15 gnoll hiding on the second floor of a hunting lodge), and I had to decide about a 2HF Champ's arrow. (I...

D&D 5E (2014) Difference between critical hits and automatic hits.

It's not too hard to imagine a situation where a ranged fighter is aiming at a guy with 3/4 cover for +5 to AC. But offhand, that's the only situation I can think of where it'd come up in the normal range of play.

D&D 5E (2014) Good art and Really bad art in the 5e PHB

I'm not too bothered about halfings, but I do wince whenever I see those ankles. They just look so thin and ... fragile. Why do this?

D&D 5E (2014) What do players spend their treasure on?

I really dig Dungeon World's Carouse Move.

    Help Converting a couple monsters

Unless you're leery about balance concerns, I don't see any reason why you can't import the 2e zombie lord aura whole cloth. (I don't have access to the 3e zombie lord.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranger

I agree that the ranger's write up is pretty bland and uninspiring. However. One of my players has an archer ranger, and we've found that favored terrain is no joke if you choose a common terrain that normally slows movement (like, forest). I'm not convinced that favored enemy will amount to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

    Yeah, I understand what you're doing. But I lack your self-control :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Beastmaster's animal companion: can it survive for 2 rounds?

I really like that approach, though. "Go For The Eyes As a bonus action while making a one-handed weapon attack, you may use your empty, free hand to urge your companion into a single attack. Resolve this attack as if you were attacking with a second strength or dexterity weapon (your choice)...

I suppose that answers my question. Thanks!
