    Failing Forward

Although you quoted me, I believe you were responding to Saelorn as I'm not advocating, and I sure as heck didn't say anything about only one way to run things.

    Failing Forward

Maybe you could elaborate a bit on what you mean by "significant strategising" here? From what I have seen/experienced, it's well possible for players to strategize--in the sense that they can plan to get their foes where they want them, before combat even starts--as long as they are able to...

    Failing Forward

As best as I can see, fail forward is actually two completely different things that are being (unfortunately) associated by sharing the same name. fail forward (adj) 1. (of game mechanics) having or exhibiting graduated degrees of success or failure fail forward (verb) 1. planned or ad hoc...

    Failing Forward

As far as fail forward D&D DM advice goes, I just stick the old standby: if you intend for the PCs to not fail, then don't roll dice. I'm really unclear on what a fail forward mechanic would look like, other than a degrees of success/failure style rule. Are there other forms it can take? Are...

Which CRPG Worlds Would You LIke to See as TTRPGs?

For me, it's Endless Legend all the way. (Followed by XCOM, of course.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xD9UkJQAiw

Why Aren't Designers Using The GUMSHOE System?

I like reading Gumshoe games, but I doubt I could ever get my players to go with a game using the system. I mean, they're hardwired to play D&D, and every rule that's not the same as the D&D rules would have to be re-explained every session. I have this same problem with a lot of Indie games...

    D&D 3.x Analyzing 4 Methods for Converting 3.5 and Pathfinder to 5E

Have you looked at something like CR * Con Mod? I'm not gonna lie; I just use a regex macro in word to rewrite the important stats, so your more complex percentage change by level method works just swell for me :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Is a CR 30 monster a suitable challenge for a 20th level party?

CR ain't a great guide past about level 15 (and well before then its usefulness starts to degrade a lot.) But on a lark, I'd say that sure a level 30 monster makes a fine BBEG for level 20 guys, assuming you're fine killing a PC here and there.

    D&D 3.x Analyzing 4 Methods for Converting 3.5 and Pathfinder to 5E

Yeah, this article matches my own experiences for the most part. One thing I have found with pathfinder is that it never hurts to add on about 15% hp to match the challenge weightiness the encounters should have had in the original adventure.

Thoughts on online play (roll20, for example)

I dunno-were there any whiteboard-style features you felt were missing? I use freehand draw to jot down maps every week, and barring a touchscreen, I can't think of anything in that category that's not there that should be. A mouse isn't as handy as a marker IMO, but I haven't felt it was any...

    What's your Kickstarter success rate?

100%, assuming Torment doesn't flop out of the blue. But I only back projects proposed by people with perfect track records.

Thoughts on online play (roll20, for example)

Overall, my biggest consideration with online play has been not the venue but the voice technology--in real life, subsets of players can have conversations without preventing others from talking. But when skyping, or whatever, really only one person can talk at a time, because doing so ties up...

Thoughts on online play (roll20, for example)

Sure he can--there's a pretty usable set of drawing tools right there on your left hand toolbar. Not brilliant by any means, but more or less as functional as any whiteboard.

WotC's Chris Perkins Talks About... Everything! Upcoming Storylines, Products, Staffing, Other World

Yeah, I am getting enough out of the 5E adventure modules. I like 'em (a little) better than Paizo's, and I'm having fun running them for my friends. The grand story itself doesn't matter to me, but that's only because their "other media" games and books haven't been very good. A quality...

    D&D 5E (2014) Best Horror Setting For D&D/ Ravenloft?

Different Moods: Ravenloft (the setting) is about surviving the unescapable domain of dread and maybe making it a little more livable in the process; whereas witcherverse is about winnowing monsters from men, in the murky places where the two mingle. Different Expected Foes: an "on theme"...

    D&D 5E (2014) Best Horror Setting For D&D/ Ravenloft?

Short answer: yes and no, since to a very large extent, this relies on your presentation as the DM rather than what's written in the read-aloud text for room 2A. Do your NPCs exploit each other/the PCs when they have the opportunity? (And not just in the physical senses of the word, but also...

    D&D 5E (2014) Best Horror Setting For D&D/ Ravenloft?

Gray more than dark, because the humans frequently fail to show humanity, but the monsters often do exhibit humanity. Both elements are important, because a key point to the witcher is that he's got to make tough choices between different hues of gray.

    D&D 5E (2014) Best Horror Setting For D&D/ Ravenloft?

Fundamentally, The Witcher lives in a morally dark world, but I wouldn't recommend a vampire/werewolf setting (like Ravenloft) for that style of game. The mood is different and the expected range of adversaries is different. The witcher's stchick is: he's got two swords, one silver for...
