    D&D 5E (2014) Monsters for a Second Monster Book

I'd prefer an MM2 that is an extension of the MM1. More dragon subtypes, more beholder subtypes. More depth on planar monsters we've seen before (all the demon lords and archdevils, for a start), and a splash of planar monsters new to 5e (eladrins, archons, einherjar, etc.). More humanoid races...

D&D 5E (2014) The Names for the Psionic Class that You Like More

Psion sucks for two reasons. 1: it's a made-up word that means nothing outside of D&D, and 2: it's homophonous with an unrelated real-life word that comes up a lot in fantasy. The first time someone suggested that I play a psion, I immediately wondered, "Scion of what?" Psionicist is just too...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is "Mystic" a bad class name?

The class is called "Mystic." Awakened and Immortal are two sub-classes.

D&D 5E (2014) [Princes of the Apocolypse] Random Encounters way to hard?

Well, it wouldn't be very interesting if the PCs could fight everyone they see and always win.

D&D 5E (2014) Can a two weapon Fighter cast magic (Eldritch Knight)?

The way I'd run it: Round 1: Attack with weapon 1 (action), attack with weapon 2 (bonus action) Round 2: Sheathe weapon 2 (free), cast spell (action) Round 3: Draw weapon 2 (free), attack with weapon 1 (action), attack with weapon 2 (bonus action)

Unearthed Arcana Psionics Hits Unearthed Arcana

I like this a lot. At first, I was concerned that you had to lock yourself into one subclass from level 1. I played a psion in 4e, and my character could do all kinds of psionic stuff. After reading it, though, it seems like the different subclasses really are totally different archetypes. This...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle travelling and navigation?

If you want your players to explore the setting, there needs to be something to explore. There needs to be risks and rewards for the players' actions. No one cares about what the scenery looks like. If it doesn't affect the game, it's a waste of time. At minimum, you need: A reason for PCs to...

Mike Mearls on D&D Psionics: Should Psionic Flavor Be Altered?

My favorite part about 5e is how it alters classic D&D mechanics and flavor just for the sake of being different from older editions! Oh, wait. I mean the opposite of that.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Problem With Gish 2.0

You probably meant to post this in the character optimization forum (here). The "D&D 5th Edition" forum is for general discussion of the game.

D&D 5E (2014) Crystal Ball: A year in, how do you think 5E will unfold going forward?

WotC's D&D department will cease any actual game design, and will exist only to manage the D&D brand. They will publish 2ish TRPG products per year (licensed to companies that actually make TRPG stuff), which portray only core D&D IP, and will serve mostly as marketing for all their multimedia...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Spellbook Cards are Back

Is there any way to tell whether it's the old or the new version (by looking at the outside of the box)?

D&D 5E (2014) Is 5e still full of Save or Dies?

Solution to this problem: Have the players tell you what spells they want. If one of them seems like it won't fit in the style of game you want to run, tell them that and have them pick a different one. Meta-solution to the meta-problem: Frame expectations and options before and during...

D&D 5E (2014) Starting Princes of the Apocalypse at 5th or 6th level

My characters have consistently been 1-2 levels behind, and it seems way too easy. Even fighting multiple foes with higher CR than the party level, they have never been in real danger of defeat. On the other hand, if they didn't have a cleric, they'd all be on their third or fourth character by now.

D&D 5E (2014) Determine encounter difficulty with monsters of very different CRs

The DMG says to not count creatures of a significantly lower level when determining the multiplier. This is how I interpret that: First, determine the adjusted XP value for the encounter with the highest-level monsters. In this case, since there's only one higher-level monster, the multiplier...
