User Name and Avatars: Origin Stories

Name The original name I was using was a combo of my email name with the word lurker (and it came from mangled Indian to try to spell forty-two n_n). Back then I only registered in order to be able to see the comments in the votes. I was just happy being a lurker, but once I registered I...

    D&D 5E (2014) What I Don't Like About Subclasses, and Potential Solutions.

PF1 sorcerer isn't that much of a solution. The bonus feats and spells were cool in theory, but in practice they were either irrelevant or came online too late.(So, for example you could pick the bonus feat you wanted or you could pick it as soon as it was available to you, which usually was...

As far as I know, it had to do with John D Rockefeller growing up poor and then remaining frugal once he hit it big. But since he was one of the richest men around, what he ate gaines prestige. Or something like that. I have no source. But speaking of sources. Have you watched the life of Leon...

I think that Start playing is kind of like that, but paid. There's also reddit r/LFG Edit: ok on a second read it isn't like that.

D&D General Race Has No Mechanics. What do you play?

The way I see it, there would be no mechanics associated with race, but by picking a race you're claiming a stake of narrative space. A fictional stance that has consequences even if they aren't summarized and turned into rules or numbers. I ser no problem with the changeling example, yes they...

D&D General Race Has No Mechanics. What do you play?

I know this very likely doesn't apply to you, but "just roleplay it" is kind of an OSR mantra as a way to discredit newer play styles as just wanting "kewl powers". Let me tell you, that this post is the most Neotrad thing I've seen you say.

D&D General Why Do You Prefer a Medieval Milieu For D&D? +

Going back to the OP, I like D&D when its medievalish, because medievalesque is both well known and far away in the past for it to be cozy, familiar and not getting too topical. Science fiction is inherently topical and can get very opinionated quiet fast. It turns into either a critique of...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

Re: Everybody starting with 16 int her prime stat. Let me preface this by saying that I don't do optimization. I don't care about the difference between a 15 and a 16. I don't let "suboptimal" get in the way of a character concept. In fact I might seek suboptimal as part of the concept. I...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

I'm reminded of a paladin I played on 4e. Low attack and defense scores, no attack powers, and thanks to feat selection I had a cleric multiclass and pacifist healer. Low AC wasn't a problem, thanks to plate mail. In combat I dispensed HP like candy and impossed control through divine sanction...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

I'm down for that. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have races with strong and unique mechanics, even to the point of outright negative modifiers to scores. But I'm even more for strong lore that matters, and between the popular play pattern of ignoring lore for the sake of just getting powers...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

You've just admitted to not care about lore? At least not in the same way as I? I think we are too far apart on this to reach an agreement.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

Let me restate the point, if it is not a standard option -or near standard like with feats and MC- it is entirely on the DMs hands, and the average DM out there is very stingy with optional stuff. It doesn't matter how generous I myself am as a DM, nothing I can do helps my chances of getting to...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: Feats/Backgrounds/Species

@OB1 The houserule is not bad. Indeed I see myself implementing something similar. But I see no point to buying into the new edition/ whatever if the books haven't come out of the shop yet and we see the need for houserules already. And also, because this does nothing for me as a player.
