I think black face has everything to do with intention, even if it's "just a joke." Provide the simple explanation you gave here of why they're wearing black paint on their face. I think your friend will be able to discern the difference. Maybe crack a joke, but still he'd be fine with it.

You can use "fake talk" to get the jump on your enemies ...oh wait. That BG 2. Never mind.

I assume that all these ideas would only be implemented with Player Buy-in attached. I think the ideas are heavy-handed, but wouldn't define them as a railroad.

One of the players has a good space for gaming, so we're usually there. If that doesn't work out, then we use the FLGS. It's less than an hour drive for me regardless of where we play.
