D&D 5E (2014) Deal Breakers - Or woah, that is just too much

So you roll 2d3 and 2d5 a lot? Sounds a little awkward. I dunno, I'm probably just prejudiced against core integration of nonstandard dice.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you want your DM to fudge?

Yep, not surprised. It's technically not fudging, because they presumably have decided "a roll of 8+ passes this check" or whatever... So if they are consistent there, okay, not fudging. But boy oh boy is it obnoxious. It's stuck with me all these years for a reason!

D&D 5E (2014) Do you want your DM to fudge?

I could have phrased it better. I mean essentially that the DM is specifically setting the DC based on the bonus of the person rolling. So what matters is the die roll, not the modifiers. So in effect deciding "if joe rolls an 11 or better on the die, he passes" rather than setting a DC based...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you want your DM to fudge?

Here's the fun thing: which of those is fudging? I don't think Iserith or Aaron or any of the strongly anti-fudging group would say that allowing the player a chance to change the dragon's behavior is fudging at all. And if you set the DC based on something semi objective, say 8 or 10 +...

D&D 5E (2014) Boots and Cloak of Elevnkind - What is the Total impact to stealth when combined

Interesting that some people suggest a DM might not differentiate between hiding and moving silently. I tend towards favoring some made up ideal of "realism" so I definitely do... But in general I'd imagine a good rule of thumb to be: Moving stealth, boots are relevant. Stationary stealth...

    What 5e got wrong

Again, the reason Gygax treats it as a "default" is because he is writing the Advanced rule set for an existing game in which 3d6 is default. He states that for advanced players the default method of D&D is apparently no good, and presents the methods he thinks would work best for AD&D.

    What 5e got wrong

Also just an aside, guys... No need to get heated or laugh at each other. It's stat generation. Not politics or religion. :)

    What 5e got wrong

They didn't really choose 3d6 as default for AD&D. It already was. In the quoted passage Gygax acknowledges that 3d6 was the previously established default already. He couldn't change that. It was the default, like it or not. Apparently, not. Hence the suggested alternatives. Remember, for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Easter eggs in D&D

I never realized how systematic these were. Message is a copper wire (because that's what we use to send messages over distance today!), false life is a bit of alcohol... I bet most material components fit like this, if you look at them right.

    D&D 5E (2014) Shapeshifting dragons - only metallic?

Another option for shape shifting evil dragons, purely by the rules, would be to take a metallic dragon and then apply the Shadow Dragon template to it. They retain all their metallic powers, and gain evil alignment and shadowy powers. 100% by the book, shadow dragon never states that it can...

    What 5e got wrong

I'm still working my way through this thread but I wanted to reply to this one question. The answer, for my limited group, is a resounding yes. I have no idea how my group stacks up compared to other groups. But most of us started in 2e (I'm the one exception, I played a bit of 1e AD&D and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are solo monsters weaker in 5e?

Hah, oh, really? I didn't break down the movement. He can't get close enough with the legendary movement? Hilarious. I guess we're assuming the fight starts with the wizard exactly the optimal distance? How easy is it to get into that position and kick this off? Any chance Mittens the Tarrasque...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are solo monsters weaker in 5e?

Oh for sure, which is why I came back to D&D at all. I would never condone this level of slavish adherence to some pedestaled concept of RAW. But I wanted to be as strictly within the explicit RAW as possible in this case, just to maintain the hypothetical white room, never ever happen in a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are solo monsters weaker in 5e?

Nope, I just stopped off in a game store to double check this! It's in the DMG, page 278, paragraph 5. Starts "big monsters typically wield..." And while I'm at it, page 148 of the PHB confirms that improvised weapons have a long range of 60 feet. Even by the strictest RAW, it's not looking...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are solo monsters weaker in 5e?

A quick Google search suggests 60 feet is long range for an improvised weapon. Can a book holder confirm? If so... Even with disadvantage he's still likely to hit, so I think your wizard is still boned.

    D&D 5E (2014) Are solo monsters weaker in 5e?

The monster manual (I think; could be DMG, away from book) specifies increased damage dice for larger than medium weapons. Double, triple, quadruple respectively. No reason this would not apply for an improvised weapon as well. You might be right about the range though, I'll have to see if I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are solo monsters weaker in 5e?

The more I think about it the more I realize that even by a boringly strict rules lawyer-ish interpretation of what options are available to the Tarrasque, this strategy doesn't work at all. Even if we don't give the Tarrasque a special "throw boulder" ability, he can just pick up any old...

    D&D 5E (2014) Are solo monsters weaker in 5e?

I know this is just a thought experiment, but I have to say... Better hope your horse never gets bogged down by a steep hill or a thicket in that full hour of riding. Also that it doesn't get tired. And that the Tarrasque never throws anything at you.

D&D 5E (2014) Levels of literary heroes (and inflation thereof)

I think this is it exactly. It also accounts for the inconsistency you mention; generally when they are running from the hordes, they have less support. At Helm's Deep there is an army (albeit a outnumbered one) to absorb some of the attention, and spread the attacks around. That lets the heroes...
