D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Apologies on misremembering which post you'd quoted; the sentence in isolation didn't give me many clues. Replying on mobile, so it's a little tedious to hunt for the previous post to double-check. I was thinking of the earlier post in which I cited examples. Looks like you figured this out...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

+4 or +5 party level in CR being a devastating threat is just. Not realistic once you get decently high level. Bounded Accuracy just isn't going to work that way. Take existing bonuses and add +X to all rolls, DCs, AC, etc. for all monsters and players. Have X be equal to level or CR, or...

D&D 5E (2014) Persuade, Intimidate, and Deceive used vs. PCs

These examples are of course simplistic and lacking in any interesting roleplaying. But. Sure, I use those skills against players. My players are all good enough role-players to roll with it. I wouldn't use them against players I didn't think had sufficient buy-in and RP experience to be...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

And... in what way was this adventure dramatically worse for this "oversight"? When I say equal representation doesn't matter, people tend to assume what I actually mean is that it matters a lot to me and I am opposed to it. But that's not it at all. It's much simpler than that. It. Doesn't...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Uh... except I gave several examples of how that appropriateness might be determined? In the post you quoted...? It seems like you're trying to make some sort of veiled implications about my mindset, which is... whatever. Your prerogative, but I'm not real interested in playing along. Not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

Thanks! Yeah. "Might need to use healing resources" doesn't sound like getting KOed. I mean, healing is inefficient so if you play whack a mole then maybe. But that's not a basic/introductory player attitude. Also low levels aren't a great example for most of this stuff... If I remember...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

I'm away from book. Could someone do me a favor? How does the XP reward of a CR 10 monster stack up against the encounter budget for 4 level 10 characters? It's no more than a medium, right? Wherein there's no expectation of a PC being downed.

D&D 5E (2014) Serious gamers and new CR formula

I was about to say this. It seems like people are over-emphasizing the 6-8 guideline.

Heck... I don't generally run modules, but look at how some of the published adventures go. The adult white dragon in RoT has toads and trolls and kobolds supporting it, some of which can fight the party at the same time. It's also got some brutal terrain control.

You are still engaging in too much hyperbole; it's actively hampering the discussion. Even if we assume it's possible for a level 10 party to defeat any single monster in the book, that doesn't mean *any* of the following: 1) the party will not be threatened by anything. 2) higher CR...

D&D 5E (2014) Serious gamers and new CR formula

I I understand your point much better now. I agree that the kraken is not a universal threat the way a dragon/vampire/rakshasa/etc are. Neither is the Tarrasque, for that matter. They are terrifying in their element; the point of them is to put their element in the PCs way, or put something...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

I guess this is an example of the main difference. I think the best avatars have very little in common with their players. Quiet nerds playing brash brutes, sweet gentle souls playing merciless killers, rich people playing poor people, men playing women and women playing men... If a setting is...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e's new gender policy - is it attracting new players?

Ditto on all counts, honestly. I really don't get the big push for "inclusivity" and "diversity." On any of the various axes... Race/gender/sexuality. If I'm playing a game about warriors in a fantasy Incan empire, I don't want a bunch of white guys any more than I'd want any female PCs. If...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

If 6 kobolds (CR 1/4? 1/2? Away from book), using clever tactics, should be expected to remain a threat that can't be totally ignored... Even against a PC of, say, 10th level... Then how is it surprising that 6 PCs of 10th level would be a threat to a CR 20 monster? That's how math works...

Or I could make the rocky ground below an endless field of lava instead. That should take care of any levitaters/featherfallers.

I guess if one of them is a wizard with Featherfall prepared he might survive. Then he can swear himself to meting out bloody vengeance upon the BBEBat

D&D 5E (2014) Serious gamers and new CR formula

Hemlock, I guess I'm confused why we would ever assume an encounter with a kraken did *not* involve a large body of water? Honest question. It just strikes me as a deeply bizarre assumption. For serious. Less seriously... I mean. I could white room an encounter between a level 4 party and a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

But that is clear hyperbole. Is a purple worm more dangerous than a ghast? Is a 10th level rogue better than a 3rd level rogue? The answers are objective. Of course they are. Therefore level means something. And so does CR. What has you mad is that it's not always so clear cut... If you're...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

I'm so so so glad CR is that inaccurate. The fact that a level 7 (or level 10 or whatever) party can theoretically face any monster in the MM is basically the crown jewel in Bounded Accuracy, and the only reason I returned to D&D at all. Your campaign world doesn't need hidden MMO zones. Or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Who wrote these CRs?

Cool. I haven't run any vamps yet. Just had the impression from a quick read of the stats that it was less threatening than expected. Vampires were on a short list of monsters I wanted to double check before running. The only monster I've specifically already run the math on and come out...
