    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

I'm not sure you're allowed to give a single kudo. Besides, Dave has put in some serious work, I think he probably deserves the whole pack of 'em. Kudos again, Dave. I like the way you're trying to blend in a good amount of lore, even if I still kind of disagree with the discretized little...

D&D 5E (2014) Concurrent initiative variant; Everybody declares/Everybody resolves [WAS Simultaneous Initiative]

Test driving this system in two games so far. Working great, with a few minor hiccups. Combat has definitely had a nice flow to it. It keeps everyone declaring actions and intentions at the same pace as when combat has not started, which is the whole goal from my perspective.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

Dave I may disagree with some of the design philosophies involved in your project, but I wanted to reiterate my respect for you. You have a lot of really creative ideas, some of which I think are downright excellent. And you have been very reasonable and open-minded about addressing criticism...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Questionnaire

Interesting slate of questions. I don't intend to skew any potential answerers, but I'm curious what your goals are with these questions. Mind sharing, or would you prefer to keep that private?

    D&D 5E (2014) Character Death

Yeah, my group of long-term players are in a low-magic world with no resurrection (most D&D magic doesn't even exist), which has typically been my preference for games in the past. I think even in a setting like that, I might allow this option going forward though. You "die" and lose an arm...

    D&D 5E (2014) Character Death

Those are interesting approaches, thanks for sharing! Personally, I actually like that my method is very open about it, and even for the unkillable "death" comes with potentially serious consequences. I think that provides a better framework to acclimate people with the idea that failure is...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's in YOUR house rule document/collection?

Sounds interesting. Got a write up you'd be willing to share? I always kind of want to use a subsystem like this but I inevitably find them too cumbersome to implement at the table.

    D&D 5E (2014) Character Death

I'm curious how other people handle PC death, and what general opinions are. I don't much care for polls; I'm more interested in a conversation. Here's how I handle it. First of all, I play with a lot of kids, people unfamiliar with RPGs, and parents who haven't played much in 10+ years. So...

D&D 5E (2014) Bonus melee attack with main hand?

That doesn't strike me as totally outrageous at first blush, just a neat way of making a really tanky rogue. Strong, sure. But I'd have to see it in action I suppose. Feats at my table are only allowed on a case by case basis, typically as in-game boons rather than chosen in place of ASIs. For...

D&D 5E (2014) Bonus melee attack with main hand?

Hemlock has it right, I let a single attack follow a dodge (also other one-off actions sometimes, situationally). I don't currently have it tied to a feat or fighting style, either, though I would probably reconsider and do something like that if it saw a lot of abuse. I haven't noticed...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

In fairness to Zap, I think he wants people to agree with the basic premise of the thread and then disagreements within that framework are okay. Sort of like a rabbinical theological disagreement: other rabbis can argue their cases, but a catholic priest might not be welcome. But it's a...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

Yeah, that's precisely why I picked CR1. Tough enough that even as a speed bump, they're one of those sharp angle speed bumps that cause your car to bounce uncomfortably regardless what speed you drive over them. To deal with them quickly at high level you're likely to use up either a lower...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

Yeah. They're in a sack, and don't have blindsight or similar. So how could they see outside it? It's just common sense. Stuff like that really doesn't need to be expressed via Conditions. That's not the mechanical/design/jargon style of 5e.

New Class: The Magician, a low magic caster class

Fantastic, man. Just fantastic. Not just the Magician, the other ones too. I wish I was planning on starting up a new low magic game in one of my old campaign worlds, so I could use these classes immediately.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

I'm away from book, so I believe you. Can you confirm if this is an oversight in the MM or if my memory of the Greatclub is wrong? If this is the case, I guess Greatclubs in the PHB deal 1d8 damage, and not 1d10 like I thought for some reason. Is that right? My apologies either way!

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

I like some of the ideas, especially the sack, but the mechanics are wrong. An Ogre's greatclub deals 2d10 damage at base. Not 2d8. This isn't arbitrary, it's explicitly defined in the rules for weapon damage. Was this just an oversight, like the spelling "orge" or did you scale it down...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

Well, first of all, my statement was that they won't be one-hit-kills without resource expenditure. That is to say, the SS or GWM will not be one-shotting them. A paladin burning a smite, a Wizard burning a spell, sure, then maybe. But that's my whole point. Even just CR 1 means they're...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Hardcore: Monster Manual

I think you misunderstand the appeal of E6 to those of us that love it. I mean, I guess Ican only speak for my group, but... to me, the appeal isn't because the game breaks at 7th level. It's because the tone changes. It begins to move away from being able to model more grounded, literary heroes...
