WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

WotC is going to remove the OGL 1.0a. That seems to be a major goal of this. Everything else is negotiable. The Open Gaming community can get something in exchange for the 1.0a going away, negotiating for something else. Or they can posture and make analogies and forfeit any right to participate...

WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

Then WotC will just remove the OGL anyway and the Open Gaming community won't have any say in what they get in return because when it came time time establish terms they just kept crying "NO!"

Which is probably why they want to revise the 1.0a. Because they can rephrase the OGL 2.0 to limit companies larger than WotC from making D&D or something. Do you really want Disney owning D&D?

WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

I was discussing the SRD and other brands companies making D&D compatible games. I don't know what you're talking about or who you're arguing with....

WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

It's not unprecedented. When Skylanders was a hit, lots of companies tried to make toy-game hybrids including Lego Dimensions but also Disney Infinities. The bigger of a hit D&D becomes the more likely a major corp will try to dip into the RPG pool as an in-house product with full support...

WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

Tome not Tomb. The Tome of Horrors by Frog God Games. It's how Paizo has the rights to the flumph and related monsters. And, yes, as D&D and RPGs become bigger they probably ARE worried about Disney or Amazon or someone not partnered with Hasbro making a D&D-esque property or using the D&D...

And WotC probably doesn't want them making an RPG that uses their rules but is set in the world of Willow.

Not all WotC IP but a lot of aspects of the game are open. Especially with the Tome of Horrors, which includes a lot of IP monsters like the flumph.

I imagine there'll be some subtle language that limits products, which they haven't mentioned as it's not relevant to the concerns of players as it doesn't involve 3PP.

WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

Talk is cheap. They've said they will defend it, but so far they've actively done nothing. It feels like they're playing chicken with WotC, hoping they blink. So far, WotC hasn't responded to the threats of lawsuits. Because Paizo is beneath their notice. It wasn't Paizo's threats that made...

Just because Paizo is the biggest fish we as TTRPG fans can see that challenges D&D doesn't mean they're the biggest fish WotC sees challenging D&D. They have a very different perspective.

WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

And if that's your attitude nothing changes and WotC just ignores you. Here's how compromise works. WotC doesn't give a crap about Paizo or the small 3PP publishers making stuff with the OGL. They're beneath their notice. Very likely, the reason they want the OGL 1.0a gone is so it isn't used...

So... they're basically just waiting until WotC sues them? That's what you're arguing Paizo is doing.

Larger companies and major brands starting to make D&D and RPG products and using their IP. They don't care if smaller companies play in their sandbox. But as D&D becomes a bigger brand and a household name, with movies and a TV show, they're likely worried about other companies that are...

WotC Talks OGL... Again! Draft Coming Jan 20th With Feedback Survey; v1 De-Auth Still On

Probably this: The old OGL lets people theoretically make D&D content that isn't just PDFs and WotC wants to limit that and crack down on non-PDFs. A OGL 2.0 that is functionally identical to the OGL 1.0a but limited to PDFs is an example of a compromise, letting 3PP continue doing what...

But they didn't and haven't filed a suit. No one is making you do anything. That's all you. When have WotC mentioned Paizo at all? That's all us.

I think they meant Wendy's and Old Spice. Paizo isn't a corporation, major or otherwise.
