D&D 5E (2014) Why Green Flame Blade is Over Rated- And You Are Doing it Wrong.

I suppose, and I could certainly see a game purpose for a delineation between low-quality and high-quality weapons (though isn't that just simple vs. martial?), but something tells me that 1d12 was not selected as the greataxe's damage die for simulationist reasons.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Green Flame Blade is Over Rated- And You Are Doing it Wrong.

You're not familiar with the basic game design precept that upgrade/advancement options should represent difficult choices in lieu of no-brainer choices? Ok, imagine you had the choice between two abilities. The abilities are essentially the same, but the first ability does double the damage of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Storied Weapons?

Considering every D&D campaign is essentially a saga in and of itself, storied magical weapons are an interesting way to award magical weapons to PCs outside of putting them in the enemy's hands or in a treasure pile.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Green Flame Blade is Over Rated- And You Are Doing it Wrong.

I suspect the OP forgot that rogues get cunning action, and how not using an off-hand weapon frees up its use. GFB and BB's problem is not necessarily with its damage (which is still a bit high considering it has a rider and it stacks on top of weapon damage), it is its weird progression. It...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Returns to Monthly With Some Revised Subclasses

Aww, Vailis Quane, Wandering Star of Fharlanghn, was really hoping that they'd redo the Horizon Walker instead.

D&D 5E (2014) Why Are Skeletons Weak To Bludgeoning Weapons?

It has to do with lore. When the demon lord Orcus called forth the first animated skeletons, he boldly proclaimed that no blade could harm them when they had no flesh to cut. Kord, eager to rise to challenges, responded, "The fist of Kord has no blade!" He then laid a generational curse on all...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

The Observant feat gives the beneficiary a +5 to both Passive Perception and Passive Investigation checks. Additionally, on page 175 of the PHB, Passive Checks are described and nothing in the description limits them to Perception checks. One of the examples given in this section, searching for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Crawford on Stealth

I prefer to use Passive Perception and other passive scores in a way very similar to the Take 10 rule from 3e: if you are in a calm, low-pressure situation, your passive score is the floor for any check, but high-pressure situations like combat always necessitate a die roll. I still use Passive...

    D&D 5E (2014) Precise Strike [Feat]

Clearly we read the same rule in different ways. The rule is awkwardly written, to be sure, but I'd instead argue that the two qualities are actually tied together and that the first notation is a redundancy. Personally, it strains credulity to argue that an attack can be both a critical hit...

    D&D 5E (2014) Precise Strike [Feat]

I'm not sure this is the best approach. "Only certain classes/builds can benefit from this" is not a counter to an ability being overpowered. If an ability is only broken if Wizards take it, it is broken overall. Even in revised form, the feat simply offers too much for a player that is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Precise Strike [Feat]

Why? Probably because you value your time and would save a lot of it if you started over.

    D&D 5E (2014) Precise Strike [Feat]

I agree with jgsugden that this feat, in its entirety, is better off left on the cutting room floor. The only thing constructive I can offer is that you're better off scrapping this and working on something else.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Get Better At Skills With These Feats

I have a cleric of Kord with the Athlete feat, and I am not sure I like the Brawny feat any better. I really wanted to, too. I do love this overall idea, though.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you use all of the P.C. races and classes from the PHB?

I've been running Curse of Strahd with my group and have allowed them to use whatever race they want from the PHB. The party ended up being pretty exotic: a half orc, two tieflings, a dragonborn, a half-elf, and a human. Using mostly exotic races really wasn't a problem. It let me start the...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, what are the most baffling and/or pointless questions your players ask?

My players will sometimes test me with improve-style questions about the environment they're exploring. I might describe a fully stocked bookcase, and one of them will be like, "I pull a book from the shelf, what is its title?" I'll have to come up with something like "The wood-worker's guide...

D&D 5E (2014) Should the game have extensive weapon lists?

I am not a fan of extensive weapon lists. I'd prefer an ultra-simplified system that gave you a damage die based on whether you used a light, one-handed, or two handed weapon, and then you can fluff it to be whatever you want. Save the fiddly bits for race and class features.

D&D 5E (2014) Flight ability: Does this make the Aarakocra overpowered?

The Arakocra's flight ability is clearly better than the abilities granted to other PC races. Whether or not this makes them "overpowered" is an open question, but it is still problematic that one PC race is unambiguously better than the others. It would be the same if there was a one-handed...

D&D 5E (2014) How have you modified PHB backgrounds in your game?

One of the players in my group tweaked his Sage background benefit so he knew a lot about dragons as opposed to being good at researching. Another player's swapped out his Hermit's discovery in order to be able to talk to bugs.
