    D&D 5E (2014) How is 5E like 2E?

I'd echo the "rulings over rules," except 5e offers a better structure for handling those rulings with unified mechanics.

Can anyone give some information on the Dying Earth DCC rules set?

I'm familiar with the basics of DCC, but the funny dice have always been a bit of a turn-off. I know there's a Unusually-Sided Polyhedral Roller app that is usable for the game, but I'm interested in your favorite parts of the system. If you've played MCC, I'd be interested in hearing how DCC...

Can anyone give some information on the Dying Earth DCC rules set?

It's currently on Kickstarter and I love Jack Vance's Dying Earth series. I am eagerly anticipating the game, but I'd like to hear thoughts from anyone who has read the rules or playtested it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Arguing for Advantage

Typically, Burning Wheel's rolls are more consequential than D&D's. When every roll is of great importance, you have fewer, more meaningful rolls.

    D&D 5E (2014) Arguing for Advantage

Let me just pop in to say this is why Burning Wheel is great: the players are expected to negotiate for a bonus die on their rolls. The GM is expected to give it to them. The mechanics work with the system whereas in 5e it often feels like it's a tightrope between the GM being too lenient or too...

D&D General Can we talk about best practices?

"Roleplay not rollplay" is very 2000s advice. Write systems that use rollplay to drive roleplay. If your system encourages rollplay at the expense of roleplay, it's a systemic issue, not a player issue.

    D&D 5E (2014) (+) Halfling Appreciation and Development Thread

Halflings are jovial, good-natured, peaceful, agrarian, plucky, epicurean. Neither one iota of change nor one complaint can be levered against them. This is the ideal race. You may not like it, but this is what peak greatness looks like.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dwarves Could Use A Rethink

Yes, sadly, that's how badly 4e's artistic design missed the mark. I think Warhammer dwarves look ridiculous also, but their design is overall better.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dwarves Could Use A Rethink

I found the art style to be an embarrassment. Technical proficiency notwithstanding, the the art shouts "epic fantasy" and "high level adventurers," but the armor's design is lacking. In the same way villains bedecked in black armor bristling with spikes are devoid of personality, so too are...

D&D 5E (2014) How the crap do you explain the rogue's Evasion ability?

To turn this around: a character who makes a Dexterity save vs. fireball or dragon's breath isn't actually leaping out of the way. How does he only take "half damage" when he's standing perfectly still? It needs be understood that a saving throw exists to measure the impact of an effect upon a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dwarves Could Use A Rethink

One of the things I like to do is take the basic tropes and then add or tweak one or two things about it. I don't like the deliberate inversion or subversion of the tropes because it feels lazy. The "cannibal halfling barbarian" is too many new spices into the old soup, so to speak, and it feels...
