    Our Physical Fitness

My update: It's been a weird batch of months. Back in October, I cut down to 155 lbs, which is about 12% bf for me. I wanted to do an extended bulk and try to gain strength at a quicker clip than I had been. It was working! I had hit a PR on bench of 270 for 4 reps, I was maxing out some of the...

D&D 5E (2014) Waterdeep - Dungeon of the Mad Mage

The maps were the best part for me, easily. DotMM is a bit of a heart breaker for me. I have wanted to run an Undermountain campaign ever since I got my hands on the original boxed set back in the early 90s. I was positively buzzing to run it for 5e. My group bounced off it pretty hard...

Is Losing your Turn The Worst That Can Happen

This echoes a sentiment stated somewhere up thread, and speaks to some rather disheartening experiences I've had around agency that, at a glance, don't seem related to the base topic of the thread but share some themes. My Friday night game is a bit of a potpourri where everyone takes turns...

    Underrated RPGs

I'll post this here, as it's a Let's Read of the MSHRPG I'll post this forum link here as it's a Let's Read of the MSHRPG that's really more of a comparison between the Original and the Advanced MSHRPG. https://forum.rpg.net/index.php?threads/marvel-shrpg-advanced-set-1986.908351/ The TL;DR...

    Underrated RPGs

Tragically, no. I've liked the first FASERIP retroclone, which basically takes the chassis from a mashup of Basic and Advanced and mashes it up with the Great Power supplement for Icons: Assembled. Though I don't condone piracy, I will note that a Google search will disclose a pile of PDFs...

    Underrated RPGs

This is a hobby horse of mine and pedantic as hell, but I would say the original yellow box for the Marvel Superheroes RPG (1984). A lot of people think of it as the basic version of the more widely known (and loved) Advanced rules (1986), but they're quite different beasts and play at the table...

Presentation and Rules Are Different Things

100% this. V:tM (2nd ed) was such a watershed RPG for me in high school. But even my first pass at it had me house-ruling to shore up some of the obvious sticking points. By the time we got in college and realized how many more botches were being rolled with high skill characters, we kind of...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I finally broke down and hit "Ignore." I can't help but wonder why someone would hang out on a primarily 5e board only to use any conversational opening/excuse to bash the edition even when no one asked or it's not germane to the topic at hand. What is this experience affording you?

    D&D General Best dungeons?

It's just a really good example of a well-designed vanilla fantasy dungeon. It rewards scouting the external terrain with alternative points of entry (rather than the obvious--but fraught--opening). Multiple ways of approaching conflict including stealth, trickery, persuasion, etc. in addition...

    D&D General Best dungeons?

I'll also add that I've come to prefer a different approach to bigger dungeons than the megadungeon. That is, rather than deeper, I wish they'd go "broader." When I was younger, I always dreamed of getting to run Undermountain back in 2e. When I finally had a chance to run it a few times for 5e...

    D&D General Best dungeons?

Another boost for Sunless Citadel and Forge of Fury. 3.x has become my least favorite D&D edition, but those two modules are great. As a player, some of the most fun I've had with a dungeon was probably at GenCon in a session for Stonehell. Old school crawlin' at its finest.

D&D General What is your most prized Dungeons and Dragons Product?

Despite not being a "stuff" person, I'm going to say I have two prized D&D items. Probably my most prized would be a beat up secondhand copy of the Moldvay Basic book signed by Erol Otus. It's my favorite ruleset signed by one of my favorite artists. The second (though not as personal to me)...

D&D General What is your most prized Dungeons and Dragons Product?

I was able to regain and expand a lot of my vintage collection in the late 00s via Amazon before everything exploded in price. It's wild how much everything has appreciated in the last 10-15 years.

D&D General Dungeons of Drakkenheim Experiences?

Hi, all. Once my group finishes Quests from the Infinite Staircase, we're beginning Dungeons of Drakkenheim as a way to try out the '24 rules. I'm hoping to run it as BtB as possible--particularly the exploration rules. For those of you who've played through it (or are playing through it now)...

D&D 5E (2024) Using AI for Your Home Game

I've been using it to generate brief room descriptions on the fly and to generate talking points for my characters. It's nice to have some ready-made dogma to quote or an arcane formula to complain about.

GMs - Do you get bored when you're a player?

I hate to admit it, but yeah. I play almost exclusively online these days, which is harder still for me to resist being restless. I try to remind myself that I get to be a viewer/listener to the story others are telling, but it can be a bit of a grind sometimes.

D&D General Why ya gotta be so Basic? Understanding the Resurgence of Moldvay's Basic

I see "nostalgia" getting thrown around as a pejorative re: B/X and the like (especially one of my gaming buddies), and it disappoints me in that it's almost preemptively used to shut down discussion. I never played B/X in the day. Rather, I started on BECMI for a few years before a very brief...
