D&D 5E (2014) So what's the problem with restrictions, especially when it comes to the Paladin?

It sounds easy, but can you think of any game that actually has great advice for using the same game element in different ways for different playstyles like this? Would this be a first in RPG history? I feel like something about this has to be more difficult than I'm imagining... Yes, I...

What makes a published adventure great?

What I have in mind for an adventure that wouldn't need to be read very thoroughly before use is a sandboxy adventure where each of the individual encounters are capable of being run off the page without prior study. So maybe you would read a page or two of introduction/background, and then read...

    Does DDN do it better?

How are you using/altering the rules under Encounters and Rewards in the DM Guidelines file for your campaign?

The moderators here do a very good job

Well I've just been permabanned from RPGnet again. Appreciating the moderation here even more atm

D&D 5E (2014) So what's the problem with restrictions, especially when it comes to the Paladin?

I think @pemerton (correct me if I'm wrong) DOES want to set up "gotcha" moments for a Paladin PC, in order to provoke character change and development. But he wants the player to be able to determine the path their Paladin takes through it and what it means, so he doesn't want a mechanic...

What makes a published adventure great?

Number one thing is that it actually saves time compared with writing your own. If an adventure says "read the whole thing thoroughly before use" anywhere, it probably fails this test.

    Does DDN do it better?

I don't like: the assumption that the DM will be tailoring encounters and treasure to the PCs rather than building a sandbox environment with "objective" encounters/treasure the fact that non-magical treasure doesn't do anything and is an empty reward (can't buy magic items, no gp=xp) the...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's the problem with restrictions, especially when it comes to the Paladin?

I feel like I explained this just before you started posting in this thread--the classic paladin's alignment restriction is best understood as analogous to like...the fighter's inability to cast spells. If a player playing a fighter has them start casting spells, the DM should step in and...

    Character Sheet Feedback

It would probably require an explanatory note of some kind, yeah.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attack Bonuses

I know what you mean, I just sounded like I didn't for a moment because I slipped into talking-to-someone-with-similar-preferences mode rather than talking-to-people-with-diverse-preferences mode.

    Character Sheet Feedback

For tracking resources that are used up one at a time and are then completely replenished (e.g. ammunition, rations--as opposed to resources that are reduced and regained in variable amounts like HP) you could do a "hangman" drawing where you draw one line for each thing. This keeps the marks...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attack Bonuses

As DM I would only accept an item wish list if the last line said "and if you do not listen, then to hell with you!" And then I would only accept it, but still not actually use it. :D

    Character Sheet Feedback

When you think about it it doesn't actually require that much more erasing--using the bubbles, assuming you heal up to max HP, you're going to be erasing every mark you make at some point with that method as well. Maybe it feels like less erasing because you do it more irregularly. Anyhoo, I...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's the problem with restrictions, especially when it comes to the Paladin?

Oh good :) I came to that comment about the appeal of the classic Paladin not in a theoretical way but just by really trying to think about how it actually works during character creation. Mostly, anyway--I was also reminded of Ron Edwards' discussion of a simulationist samurai vs. a narrativist...

You're doing what? Surprising the DM

I bring this up because I'm searching for an explanation of why the other side of the convo has been so slow on the uptake of your explanation of how the city is more important to the narrative of the game than the desert... Feels to me like they're being nitpicky and contrarian about that...

    Character Sheet Feedback

Pretty nice, I prefer it to the official sheet already. Using hundreds of little circles to represent every hit point is pretty inelegant though. Why not use an abacus, like this: 10|_ _ _ _ _._ _ _ _|_ 01|_ _ _ _ _._ _ _ _ Top row represents tens, bottom row represents ones. The slot to the...

D&D 5E (2014) So what's the problem with restrictions, especially when it comes to the Paladin?

I support the idea of something like this in a game module, but I think it's too dependent upon fairly aggressive GM scene-framing to work well for core. You're right that the B/X and 4e alignment systems do a better job at this--and I think this is why B/X alignment is broadly favored by the...

Especially Umbran. He's always respectful to people and gives them a warning and a chance to reconsider their behavior before slapping them with a thread ban or forum ban. I appreciate that. That is all :)

You're doing what? Surprising the DM

I think @pemerton et al have done a very good job explaining the playstyle in which it's reasonable for @Hussar to make scene-framing suggestions directly to the DM in the middle of a session. I think I have a good handle on it and I can see how a DM could be expected to skip the desert...
