D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

I would like to think so, but I don’t see a trajectory where the adventures are getting better. That makes me think that lessons aren’t being learned from one publication to the next. Forget personal criticism. What does that say about WotC’s process?

D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

I want to like WotC’s adventures (I do like their supplements, XgtE has a bunch of helpful stuff and I’m looking forward to TCoE.) but I’ve become frustrated by the unnecessary extra work they seem to frequently entail to make them into something I can present to my players. I don‘t understand...

D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

It’s not about making strawman arguments, those are fun and super flammable. Same with over-exaggeration (except for the flammable part). It’s about tone. The internet is rife with vitriol and Morrus et al strive to keep Enworld a place where people can have intense arguments as long as people...

D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

Well I wouldn’t know as I don’t have a copy :) but the fact new products still come out with head scratching decisions makes me sad. I gave up on WotC after the mess that was Dragon Heist. Edit: I guess my point is I was buying these things to make my life easier but the reality was they...

D&D 5E (2014) A brief rant about Rime of the Frost Maiden, farming, logistics, and ecology

I think after 50 years the game publishers would have finally learned how to assemble a module that’s runnable and sensible. The fact that almost every one has major issues is a sad testament to how bad at it they are. Is writing an adventure really that hard? If the pros can’t do it what hope...

D&D 5E (2014) 9-Page Preview of Nazi Dracula Must Die!

I think I want this just to see how they pull it off! Edit: A satisfying 2-hour adventure seems like an incredible feat by itself...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

I believe so. The bit where Harshnag(?) gives them the main quest. Instead Blagothkus can be that link. Especially as he might owe them a favor if they liberate his castle. I had the dragon cult hold his wife’s spirit hostage in order to get Blagothkus to comply with their demands.

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Not that you asked, but I recommend slotting in the second half of Storm King’s Thunder as Iymrith’s plan to keep the giants busy while the Tiamat cult makes their preparations just fits so well. My players enjoyed the mission of getting the Giant ordning restored and earning the favor of their...

D&D 5E (2014) Chase Rules - help checking the maths

For chases i wouldn’t worry about DCs but complications. What are the obstacles both quarry and pursuers will have to navigate while engaged in the chase. Think about a roof top chase. The gaps between buildings will vary and the landing surfaces treacherous. Perhaps there are routes the PCs can...

D&D 5E (2014) Zendikar Rising Streaming Event and D&D Adventure tomorrow (Friday)

D&D 5E (2014) Zendikar Rising Streaming Event and D&D Adventure tomorrow (Friday)

My feeling is that it’s very much a “lost world“ kind of setting. Civilization, such as it is, clings to the coasts of the various lands but untold dangers and legendary treasures lie within. So some kind of quest to find a long lost artifact would be ideal.

D&D 5E (2014) Zendikar Rising Streaming Event and D&D Adventure tomorrow (Friday)

Just ran that adventure the other night as a one-shot. Good times. But agreed these mini-settings are ripe for DMs Guild expansions.

Is it weird that I can’t imagine returning to the same starting location? I feel like I don’t have time to explore all the settings I’d like to, but I’m going to try!

D&D 5E (2014) As a DM, what monster abilities do you find difficult to run?

I do find transcribing the stat block into an abbreviated form helps familiarize myself with the monster and makes me think about how it might behave. It also lets me add lair actions into the stat block (as they should be). It is a bit ridiculous that WotC makes us do all this work to make...

D&D 5E (2014) As a DM, what monster abilities do you find difficult to run?

I’ve started transcribing combat spells into my stat block summaries, it’s helped a lot. But then I don’t use Roll20.

Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden -- A Comprehensive Review

I‘ve run part 2 of SKT and tried a high level (failed) remix of OotA and my concern with ID:RotFM is the relentless sameness of it all. It got tedious in OotA and I imagine the same would happen in this adventure. SKT has a lot more variety of locations. I think a monotonous environment really...
