D&D 5E (2014) How would you improve monsters?

I would like every creature to have both a damage type resistance and a damage type vulnerability. The game makes such a big deal about what type of damage every attack/effect does, yet does so little with it. Aside from that, mostly I think it's fine.

    D&D 5E (2014) Shield Saltiness

How is it being a hardass to play by the clear rules? There are a lot of unclear rules (too many...), but if you want to equip a shield, draw a sword, and attack with the sword, that's very clearly two actions. Don a shield: PHB146. 1 action. Draw a sword: PHB190. Free object interaction...

Official News A Sneak Peek At Magic

Interestingly, it's not only those two spells. WotC seems to have thrown in the multiple targets column as a red herring. Let me just toss out a few examples. These examples necessarily assume a hit / failed save. Level 1: Burning Hands. DMG 283 says it should be 2d6 damage. It's 3d6, with...

D&D 5E (2014) Keep Calm and Calm Emotions

And still not the worst offender, by far! Incendiary Cloud tells you, "The cloud moves 10 feet directly away from you in a direction that you choose." My emphasis to show the two aspects that cannot both be true. Directly away from you is a very specific direction that involves no choice...

D&D 5E (2014) Keep Calm and Calm Emotions

Such is the weakness of natural language applied to a technical subject. I read it as, "For the duration, you can suppress any effect causing a target to be charmed or frightened" - you read it as, "You can suppress any effect causing a target to be charmed or frightened at the time of casting...

Tasha's Cauldron of Everything: An In-Depth Review

I really like the Master Scrivener feature but I'm very surprised it didn't get a quantity limitation - only a once per day limitation. Every other such feature says something like "the ___ disappears if you create another one or if you die." For the reusable cost of 1 sp per scroll, any...

D&D 5E (2014) What is up with the popularity of watching other D&D groups play the game?

Consider that a large segment of the audience is there for just that. Don't think of it as a game, think of it as a talk show with a theme. When I listen to Acquisitions Incorporated: The C-Team, it's not about the game they're playing; it's about a fun time with a group of friends. AI:C is...

D&D 5E (2014) Yawning Portal set by WizKids

Agreed, that price is highway robbery for what amounts to three flat sheets (that aren't even printed with a design to scale with the props... look at the stairwells in particular) and a handful of plastic doodads. The infinity mirror is a nice touch but you can buy $10 infinity mirrors on...

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #4: Druid

Agreed, I also feel wizards should get prestidigitation for free. They're both extremely thematic spells with such a high roleplaying value and such a low adventuring value that they really shouldn't have to compete for your limited choices with cantrips like firebolt, mage hand, frostbite...

D&D 5E (2014) Which of these backstories do you think could be most interesting to play?

IMHO it doesn't matter what anyone but you finds interesting about your character(s). You'll be the one playing, you need to pick the one you want to play most by whatever arbitrary criteria suits your whims. You'll have opportunities to try all of them eventually.

    D&D 5E (2014) Aspurgers/autism effects?

It's hard/impossible to give one answer to the question since we're all different. For a character "like me" I feel it's enough to pump INT and dump CHA (Wizard is therefore a natural fit). Everything else will come out through character flavor and actions. Do what interests you, have your...

D&D General Naming the Barbarian? [added battlerager]

I think it was more to do with people leeching off society and not earning their keep. I'm not a scholar of the English of that period by any means, but I would say it pretty clearly translates along the lines of "All vagabonds, fools, bards, scroungers, and suchlike idle people, shall be burnt...

D&D General Naming the Barbarian? [added battlerager]

From a 16c. list of historical laws of Scottish kings, in Sir James Balfour, "Practicks: Or, a System of the More Ancient Law of Scotland," 1754: Or just do a google search for 'bard etymology'. I'm not your internet. Neither has [insert politically insensitive term here that was later...

D&D General Naming the Barbarian? [added battlerager]

I feel like I have to poke at this :p. You say barbarian does it the least? I'd say it does it as well as most of the classes. Few of the classes actually describe anything resembling what the character does. They describe a noun, and we all bring our shared assumptions about the verbs we...

    D&D 5E (2014) Making Prepared-Spell Casters Into Known-Spell Casters (+)

If it solves the problem for your group, go for it. I don't think it breaks anything mechanically, just thematically. 84 spells by level 12 is quite good - kudos to the DM. IMO the problem with the wizard rules is that it's extremely dependent on DM generosity for spells learned. You get 2...

    D&D 5E (2014) Making Prepared-Spell Casters Into Known-Spell Casters (+)

To me, it seems like a solution without a problem. Prepared casters in your system are trading the ability to plan ahead with having more options than usual in the moment. I don't think it's bad per se, but you haven't explained what you're trying to accomplish with such a change.
