D&D 5E (2014) Wall of Force Question; Can it cut through Stone?

Even though they decided not to do this, for future reference a staff of power has two spells that I think could reasonably be used to start an avalanche: fireball and lightning bolt. I’m picturing that scene in Fellowship of the Ring where Saruman hits the mountain with lightning and nearly...

D&D 5E (2014) Wall of Force Question; Can it cut through Stone?

@LordEntrails Do they have access to similarly-leveled spells like Telekinesis, Animate Objects, Bibgy's Hand, or Polymorph? I think it would be easy to make a case for starting an avalanche with any one of those spells. Heck, maybe even Shatter or Fireball if the rocks are loose enough. I...

D&D 5E (2014) Wall of Force Question; Can it cut through Stone?

To me, it's pretty clear that Wall of Force does not cut stone: the wall must be "free floating or resting on a solid surface." Cutting through a mountain does not fit either of those conditions.

Playtest (A5E) Level Up Playtest Document #2: Fighter

My emotional reaction is to say, "Wizard next pls!" because that's the one I care about. Logically though, I probably want wizards to come last so there's more time to refine it and learn from developing the other classes. And realistically, it'll happen when it happens. So, you know, just...

D&D 5E (2014) Any of these Feat changes look too good?

Does this actually matter? What rituals actually use a stat? I'm not saying there aren't any, but all the rituals I can think of just happen without a check or save. The reason they specifically brought up fire as a damage type is that 5e spells are balanced around fire being the most...

D&D 5E (2014) What are some cool/neat standard PHB wizard spells?

You're welcome to use that house rule in your own games, but that's not 5e rules. Character stats do not limit player agency. Do you make your players roll to attempt to follow a plan? If the player of a low-Int Barbarian character solves a puzzle before the rest of the team, do you remind...

D&D 5E (2014) What are some cool/neat standard PHB wizard spells?

I think it definitely is. The goal of measuring real world intelligence is to remove all "book smarts" from the equation and only measure an idealized, innate problem-solving ability. In reality, such tests measure both factors. Anyway, the DnD terms are definitely in bizarro land sometimes...

D&D 5E (2014) What are some cool/neat standard PHB wizard spells?

That's your prerogative as DM, but let me remind you that the Intelligence stat is not a measure of what we call intelligence in common English. In 5e, the Intelligence stat refers to learned knowledge - history, religion, etc. Every PHB description of an Intelligence skill is either recalling...

D&D 5E (2014) What are some cool/neat standard PHB wizard spells?

People forget about it because it doesn't matter unless you're trying to, I don't know, pick locks or scribe spell scrolls while in the form of a giant ape. Stats only apply to ability checks, and the sorts of ability checks your friends might make while in combat are usually the ones that are...

D&D 5E (2014) Removing Ability Score from offense

How "hard" you hit isn't what's important. How effectively you hit is. In that sense, yes, that's what's being argued. Given equal level, the smarter barbarian knows where to hit. The charismatic one knows how to distract the opponent enough to get past their defenses. The stronger one can...

D&D 5E (2014) What are some cool/neat standard PHB wizard spells?

If he has 4th level spell slots and isn't using Polymorph, it's only because he doesn't know about it, didn't read it carefully, or he played with a jerk DM sometime in the past who nerfed the magic beans out of it. Let him turn a friend into a giant ape or t-rex and he'll discover the best...

D&D 5E (2014) Removing Ability Score from offense

I like it, and your example doesn't seem weird to me at all. Taking school as a reference point (you know, that time you were numerically compared to the people around you), I would argue that I outperformed my peers largely due to being more studious rather than being more intelligent...

D&D 5E (2014) Food weight consumption and weight of food/rations

I’m not trying to justify anything, I’m only trying to find an explanation that fits the facts. Interpretations of implied meanings are only that; however confusing their text is, it does not explicitly contradict itself. You can try to change the facts to fit your interpretation, but I...

    D&D 5E (2014) DM's Guild license

Yes she can, but it is considered best practice to cite her sources. You can read through the FAQ for those best practices and the like, but core of the agreement makes it clear on its own. As other authors create content for the Dungeon Masters Guild and expand the Forgotten Realms through...

D&D 5E (2014) Food weight consumption and weight of food/rations

This. The actual rule is: A character needs one pound of food per day and can make food last longer by subsisting on half rations. Eating half a pound of food in a day counts as half a day without food. Now, I'm not defending the way it was written - it seems designed to mislead because the...

Level Up (A5E) Reworking ASI's and feats by giving "ASI" points every character level, instead of 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th and 19th level.

I think it’s a really neat idea that I would find fun, but honestly I think it’s too complex for general usage. Not everybody is going to want to manage a pool of potential benefits between levels. I think a really nice middle ground would be to keep the ASIs where they are and just rework the...

D&D 5E (2014) Reducing High Magic (6th-9th levels) Spell Slots Option

Your enthusiasm to look "right on the internet" has blinded you to what I wrote. To quote myself: Keep reading to the end of the line and you'll see your mistake in assuming anyone but you is wrong. As for the rest of it, it's entirely on you for asking for feedback without providing the...

D&D 5E (2014) Reducing High Magic (6th-9th levels) Spell Slots Option

That's not a correct AC calculation. Elven Chain gives an AC of 13 + Dex modifier (max of 2) + 1. So after the armor and Dex, you're at AC 16. Your magic shield is certainly not standard fare for a wizard, as it requires special proficiency to use - nothing inherently wrong with that, but be...

D&D 5E (2014) Reducing High Magic (6th-9th levels) Spell Slots Option

Agreed. I can only assume copious magic items. I'm assuming wizard class for lack of more info as many of the spells being complained about are wizard spells. Most wizards, even by level 20, rarely exceed an AC of 16 even with Mage Armor. Shield helps of course, but the duration is so short...
