D&D 5E (2014) You get one spell vs. a demon lord... which one?

I haven't seen any mention of Forcecage yet. Arguably one of the best spells in the game. No save, no concentration, 1 hour duration, immune to dispel magic. Even if it can still fight back through an open cage, it's limited to ranged attacks, and a lot of demon lords have powerful melee...

Unearthed Arcana UA feats, are they trying to allow people to not have to multiclass to get class abilities?

Magic Initiate clearly goes into the combat-useful bin, not the utility bin. Try to think of it this way: the game is designed around combat, whether we play it that way or not. All classes and subclasses were therefore designed around their ability to contribute to a combat encounter...

Unearthed Arcana UA feats, are they trying to allow people to not have to multiclass to get class abilities?

No, you really didn't understand it. More on that after the break. I hope you're having fun knocking over those straw men, but nobody is suggesting that you have to take combat spells in a system that differentiates features with combat uses from those that don't. Class features such as...

Unearthed Arcana UA feats, are they trying to allow people to not have to multiclass to get class abilities?

I think you misread what @Micah Sweet wrote. They suggested siloing the feats, not the characters. Then, characters pull from various feat pools at the appropriate levels and therefore have to develop both in AND out of combat instead of being able to focus on only one dimension.

D&D 5E (2014) Thief Rogue throwing Ball Bearings everywhere

Indeed, that's what we're discussing, metal balls. For the purposes of their intended use by an adventurer, they require no particular manufacturing finesse. As I also enjoy a bit of pedantry, calling them ball bearings is an obvious mistake from a writing staff that comes from a time period...

Unearthed Arcana UA feats, are they trying to allow people to not have to multiclass to get class abilities?

I don't think this is a real problem. You already have to take combat and non-combat features, and it's not ruining anybody's fun. Backgrounds are essentially collections of utility feats, and classes/subclasses contain both combat and utility features that kick in at various levels. All...

Unearthed Arcana UA feats, are they trying to allow people to not have to multiclass to get class abilities?

I like this idea. Honestly I would prefer to have subclasses entirely handled with class-specific feats, instead of all this subclass proliferation. It's not what you were trying to say, but that's one way it could be done. General feats separated into combat and non-combat. Class feats...

D&D 5E (2014) Thief Rogue throwing Ball Bearings everywhere

It's only difficult if you want to use them in a mechanical interface to reduce friction. If you're out to make a tripping hazard, they are extremely trivial to make. I can do it with a campfire, an iron skillet, some lead, and a bucket of water. The higher I can get above that water, the...

Unearthed Arcana UA feats, are they trying to allow people to not have to multiclass to get class abilities?

I wouldn't fret too much, I think the proposed method of removing them would only remove them as a general rule. So, rather than having a general rule that "some characters get to make use of bonus actions at certain stages in their development and if they do that then they can't do this other...

Unearthed Arcana UA feats, are they trying to allow people to not have to multiclass to get class abilities?

Most of the time, I agree that bonus actions are fine, but a quick internet search will reveal a plethora of questions about them. I would say for myself, it definitely took a few furrowed brows and page flips to understand the intended interplay between bonus action spells, action spells, and...

D&D 5E (2014) Thief Rogue throwing Ball Bearings everywhere

This is getting ridiculous. Please stop with this nonsense already and just google "shot tower." Falling drops of lead do form spheres due to surface tension, they just need far enough to fall. And no, they absolutely do not need to be perfectly spherical on a perfectly flat surface in order...

D&D 5E (2014) Thief Rogue throwing Ball Bearings everywhere

You seem to have quoted @TheCosmicKid but completely ignored what they wrote. A shot tower is a building expressly designed for producing spheres of lead in mass quantities by dropping liquid from a height. The lead solidifies into spheres as it falls and is collected at the bottom. You could...

D&D 5E (2014) Grappler Feat and Being Restrained Open Discussion

I don't read this as a question of specific beating out general. Both apply. In cases where both advantage and disadvantage apply, they cancel out. So in the case of the grappler, you get no bonus and no penalty, while the target suffers a penalty. This isn't half bad on its own, and is very...

    DDAL simulacrum question

5E DDAL, correct? Where are you seeing these claims? 1) I am not aware of a simulacrum having any special CR given in the rules. If a rule targeting the simulacrum requires using its level, I would set that level equal to the original target of the simulacrum spell. If that target is a PC...

Unearthed Arcana UA feats, are they trying to allow people to not have to multiclass to get class abilities?

A little bit tangential to the direction this thread went off in, but regarding some of the comments at the top of the thread, I think one of the angles to consider is the user accessibility and game design sides. If we're discussing significant rules changes, I'm assuming a theoretical 6E or...

    D&D 5E (2014) messy's 5e newbie questions thread

I'd like to add Mending to your list of spells that can heal constructs. RAW it doesn't work on undead, but since corpses are objects, you could repair a corpse before your made it undead it or-holdonasecond... I just realized that Mending is the perfect assassin's spell to hide a knife wound...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Inversion idea (Counterspell alternative)

@whatheck and @Harzel I waffled back and forth with just making it a straight casting stat roll, and I think it works fine that way, too. I just have strong feelings for wizards and I feel like the Arcana skill should get more use (I'm also for using Arcana to try to push the boundaries of...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Inversion idea (Counterspell alternative)

I agree, Arcana it is. That was my original intent anyway. This sort of manipulation of spell energies probably requires a solid understanding of spell theory.

D&D 5E (2014) Spell Inversion idea (Counterspell alternative)

I see, on these forums at least, a number of complaints about Counterspell, mostly centered around people not liking that nothing happens if it's successful. On the one hand, I feel like this is mostly an issue with stingy narration: fireball fizzles vs narrative blast of heat that maybe singes...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you handle this? - DM edition

I mostly agree with Salthorae. 1. See XGE 78. Pick the higher value, give advantage if both apply. Tool proficiencies do not get a lot of use, this helps. 2. It only feels silly if it's something like an Arcana or Religion check, etc. that a player has built their character around, in which...
