    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Not intended to be disparaging but I view the above quote as rather skewed and biased. In response to your "Play to Win" example and substitute a heavy roleplayer who only wants to talk about themselves as equally irritating to a normal party. The point is that there are more archtypes that...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

To be fair.... a player will not know how everything is going to work in advance without consultation with the DM. To many issues within the game that is chalked up to "Expect Table Variation" (ETV)... from spells to game mechanics, many items not cut and dry and definitely gray

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

To all... I fully understand that it CAN happen.... My comments were based on the inference from the poster that it is a COMMON occurrence in that particular game. I could be wrong in inferring that but the wording used in that post and previous posts makes me come to that conclusion.

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Semi-Joking... Are you sure you folks are playing DnD and not some other game? No combat for an entire session is extreme, not just for me but imagine for most people here.... given that one of the pillar books of the game is the Monster Manual

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

This is a rather odd statement... I would argue the point that playing and winning are the same in that context. Are you inferring that there are people who play this game and want to "lose"?

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Yes he does.... I find it very amusing that we both powergame but we do it for totally different reasons... As stated earlier, you want to kick ass.... which is totally cool with me.... However, I power build to be like a fire alarm... "in case of fire break glass" In organized play, I cant...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Then if combat is not the key component in your party's level advancement, why would a combat powergamer not be welcomed in that party? In the course of achieving the next milestone, there should be ample opportunity for each individual player to shine due to the DM basically earmarking events...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

That just means more than likely the burden is on you as DM to ensure that party succeeds overall.... the could be fudging dice rolls, using lame tactics or no tactics at all and just selling out your monsters as bags of experience that you as DM distribute out. This is assuming combat is the...

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

All players should be doing this (conserving resources always), not just powergamers

    D&D 3.x Thoughts of a 3E/4E powergamer on starting to play 5E

Sir... I am going to have to disagree with your observations.... 5E is not as random as you may have witnessed. In fact, a well built character should hit its target practically 100% of the time due to the enormous amount of tools available to characters. Advantage, Precision from the Battle...
