    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

I don't disagree with that. What I disagree with is the idea that you can't link the usage of arcane magic to a group of people who didn't actually use arcane magic, especially since the overall story they were involved in had a mystical tone that translates well into arcane magic in D&D terms...

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

Maybe you should not call someone else's idea "terrible nonsensical" with no provocation if you expect productive conversation. Quite a double standard you have there.

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

People on message boards are notorious for attacking novel ideas about anything, all the time. It's virtually all you see - someone presents an idea, and it gets nitpicked to hell and back by people who didn't originate the idea and are usually just being pedantic, often using fallacious...

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

I actually like a lot of what you've done here mechanically, especially keeping a lot of what filled out the 4e swordmage. I would probably do some reflavoring of this and try it out pretty much as-is in my campaign. Thanks for the link!

https://www.amazon.com/Warrior-Cults-Mystical-Murderous-Organizations/dp/0713727292 I bet this book would offer a lot of interesting ideas.

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

Right, because just look at the Paladin. Clearly, actually having used magic (or even being believed to have used magic) is necessary to inspire a class that uses magic in D&D. Also, clearly, good ideas are always universally accepted as such when they first emerge. All it is is egotistical...

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

Yes, and the D&D Argonaut would be an idealized version of the group of mythical adventurers and soldiers who sailed with Jason to recover a magical artifact. I don't see how the flavor link isn't intuitively obvious to people.

Thank you for getting it, even if your name/concept would be different from mine.

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

1.) one or two people isn't "uniformly negative.", and 2.) Actually, you can, that's almost always how these concepts take hold. 3.) No one here would know whether it makes sense or not because they haven't seen the concept realized. Again, the ENTIRE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD is to discuss...

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

I'll add a couple to this list: Vanguard Luminary Both carry a connotation of "elite", and Vanguard also essentially means "leading from the front" - something that can definitely be attributed to arcane warriors. The problem, like with many other gish concepts and names, is that they are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

Thanks for your childish hyperbole, but I kindly disagree - in part because the concept is more than just "fighter/mage".

The Golden Fleece is a symbol of power, and has sometimes been interpreted as a book of alchemy.

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

Not really. They were modeled after the knights of the round table, who were essentially just knights. Giving them divine magic was a way of making them more "exceptional" than the average fighter or knight, in the exact same way that naming a professional adventurer "argonaut" would make them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

My rebuttal to that is that paladin doesn't actually scream fighter/cleric either. The only reason you make that connection is because of concept link that D&D helped create which was very, very loosely based on the Paladins of Charlemagne's court. Why, then, could a fighter/mage archetype not...

    D&D 5E (2014) Concepts for an arcane half-caster/gish

So, this is something that has always been strangely absent from the base class roster in D&D, and when we've gotten it as an "advanced" class in prior editions it's always been a bit lame, like being called "swordmage" and having no interesting fantasy behind it other than being a combination...

    D&D 5E (2014) Revised Cleric

(This is an update from a concept I posted a while back. Since there were heavy revisions, I decided to start a new thread rather than bumping the old one) I’ve always had a beef with the design of the cleric in D&D, and 5e is no different. The domain-as-subclass design is highly flawed in my...

D&D 5E (2014) Which classes would you like to see added to D&D 5e, if any? (check all that apply)

I listed them in my post, hahhahh. Not sure how you missed it =P I actually think this is true of all classes to some extent (I can't stand how the cleric is automatically martially-oriented with no theming for robed non-fighter priests), but we also have a full roster of 12(?) playable classes...

D&D 5E (2014) Which classes would you like to see added to D&D 5e, if any? (check all that apply)

I'm worried they're going down the path of shoehorning every concept into a subclass or a background, which is the wrong way to go. Some concepts are thematically broad/meaty, interesting, and iconic enough to be full classes that could have a ton of subclasses, and there's asymmetry in what we...
